Editor's Pick:
Man, I just love these local groups; they just sound so good, so much a product of playing in front of an audience. Orquesta Lucena’s no different; the band, from Philadelphia, and led by the bassist Hector Lucena and the pianist David Colon, tears up the place, stretching out on tunes like "La Negra Tomasa," and that’s right, it doesn’t sound like it’s ever sounded before. The band runs through a cool bunch of tunes, including Cheo Feliciano’s great composition "El Raton," Tite Curet Alonso’s "Anacaona," "Puerto Rico" by Ismael Quintana and Eddie Palmieri. There’s even a Joe Cuba tune to allow a rapper to show off his stuff. Tons of brass, and piano solos and it’s all totally good. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-06-10)
