Original de Manzanillo Calentito The title isn’t kidding. This is Cuban charanga at its best, old styled, but modern sounding in its drive and ferocity. Great arrangements: the violins split up and play contrary lines at times; but the point here is dance floor mania, with super cool montunos, and nasty, nasty singing. No false steps, just track after track of highly imaginative, amazingly achieved music. The breaks make you want to get up and dance and each track has a different rhythm — have to give credit to whoever produced the recording, which also sounds alive, as if the band were playing in front of an appreciative audience, but recorded with all the advantages of a studio. Like: you can hear each percussion instrument clearly. Here’s a modern masterpiece, in an older style, but one that I bet in a 100 years will be valued if only for the ease with which it reaches perfection. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-06-06)
