Editor's Pick:
This album has a nice warm sound. There’s a great mix of jazz melody and Latin rhythms. The piano doesn’t stray too far from jazz and blues, which actually makes for a refreshingly different kind of Latin Jazz release. Percussionist-leader Willie Martinez is a great drummer and several tracks, like the title opening tune, benefit from his mastery of both jazz and afro-Latin idioms. If you like your jazz melodic and groovy, like Poncho Sanchez and Mongo Santamaria’s jazz dates, you will love this album. The perennial bolero chestnut “Cosas del Alma” gets a good tricky jazz rearrangement here, with J. Walter Hawkes adding a glistening ‘bone solo towards the end. The closer, “Anthony,” is a great upbeat swinger with some cool baritone work from Max Schweiger, while “Helen” is kind of dreamy/mellow in a Brazilian way, with the welcome addition of Fender Rhodes piano that takes you back to the breezy jazz-samba fusion of the 60’s and ‘70s. Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-06-06)
