Here’s a burning new band from Colombia. Formed in 2005, it comes off as a classic salsa orchestra, heavy on the trombones, and with the high, nasal singing that let’s us know that the band’s from Colombia. Man, this thing generates some swing, and the trombone soloist can blow the place apart, dropping in quotes from “Autumn Leaves,” double tonguing, really improvising. But wait, there’s more: singing against just percussion, some sort of Colombian version of the rumba; folklore shows up amid the highly polished salsa surface of a modern dance band and on a tune like Neguanje the band uses traditional Colombian rhythms — cumbia, actually--under the smooth horn arrangements. Slick, good stuff.
