Yes, the real deal, a great recording by a longtime master of the trombone, Steve Turre. With a band that is extraordinary — Kenny Garrett on saxophone, Sean Jones on trumpet, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Peter Washington on bass and a percussion section of Ignacio Berroa and Pedro Martinez —Turre marches his way through fluid, improvised backdrops; a rhythm section like this is as good as it gets. Plus, you get Kenny Garrett, one of the most impressive saxophonists of his generation, and a graduate of Miles Davis’ bands. Most of the tunes work over ostinatos of some sort (the ones that don’t are deep groovers, like a blues), and Turre’s figured out just the right balance between improvisation and form. I guess that’s a footnote thought, since this is a special session, touched by light, one I keep going back to.
