Just in time for summer, Mr. Polanco has given us this heavy salsa treat that is marathon in length and chock full of energy. So at your next dance party or BBQ, slap this slab of uncut salsa on the box and find out just what Conjunto Amistad and friends are all about. Since his days with fellow Bronx Boricua Wayne Gorbea and all through a distinguished West Coast career, Johnny has brought us tasty licks on tres and cuatro, and here on his long awaited follow up to “Pa’l Bailador,” there is something for everybody. This time Canada’s Cuban dynamo Jesus "El Niño" Pérez is all over the mix and that’s just fine with me (his lyrics are often a chuckle). There are also healthy echoes of Spanish Harlem Orchestra (Ray De La Paz, Jimmy Bosch), Pacheco (invoked by the massive talents of fellow New York transplant and jazz flautist Artie Webb), and Cachao’s descarga sound. Warning to those with pacemakers: some of the tunes are quite manic – perhaps a bit too fast for some dancers, but peppy enough to make you dance in 100 degree heat! I actually really enjoyed the remix (the ironically titled “Con Computadora No”) and the Happy Birthday tune comes in handy at parties. A great value for your money.
