DJ Bigboss has put together a hardcore salsa gorda compilation for dancers and party animals that is sure to please. The opening track, “El Viernes Social” is a slamming big band cover version of the Joe Cuba T.G.I.F. classic which gets you in the mood and sets the tone for the collection – fast paced, exciting, non-stop dance action. Next up, the unreleased Don Perignon track “Así Dice Perignon,” where the coro proclaims that salsa will never die because the rhythm and flavor make it unique and beloved around the world, and Don Perignon will take you there. El Gran Combo is represented as well (though it’s not their best), and the excellent but underrated Costa Brava follows – you never see these two groups back to back on a CD or in concert due to Rafael Ithier’s unwarranted ill will towards Costa Brava, but I think the El Gran Combo pales in comparison here. Some say Costa Brava was the trend-setter in innovating salsa from Puerto Rico in the 80s, and “Hoy Supe De Ti” shows they haven’t lost their swing – great brass, tasty vocals, good pace for dancers – a group well worth investigating (someone should reissue their old records on CD!). Victor Manuelle kicks it as well with guest Eddie Palmieri on the hard hitting “Dos Generaciones,” and the hot tracks just keep coming. There are some pleasant surprises from some more obscure independent artists like 8 Y Mas with their excellent cover of the Ruben Blades classic “La Maleta” (Frankie Vázquez makes the song his own), and there are some famous names like the fabulous Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Óscar de León, who sings of black pride on the funky “Mi Raza Negra.” Bigboss also picked the best recent La Solución and Mel Martinez cuts, and the album ends with La Tropa’s cool version of “Lluvia Con Nieve,” a proto-salsa descarga made famous by Mon Rivera years ago. Over all a solid DJ tool with exceptional value, and an excellent party soundtrack for your summer celebrations. Get it while you can!
