Just non-stop improvising, descarga-esque perfection, with the Cuban pianist Rodriguez setting mood after mood on a recording that draws together a bunch of live dates. And here’s the cast: the pianist is joined by Tata Güines and Changuito on percussion, Ruben Chaviano on violin, plus a bunch of other great musicians. The tracks stretch out and Rodriguez, who may be the most underestimated pianist of his generation, works through pieces by Emiliano Salvador, Bobby Carcasses and Chucho Valdes. Again, medium tempos, adult music with patience. The recording’s so relaxed it should be studied as a model of how to play with the longer distance in mind. Just beautiful.
