The Caribbean Jazz Project’s dropped the great guitarist Steve Khan and added a big band. And the big band does some shouting, tearing through modern arrangements of standards by Oliver Nelson, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie; Dave Samuels, the leader and vibraphonist wrote a bunch of tunes for the date as well. And it’s modern music that’ll sound great on the radio, big and brassy and energetic and full of modern harmonies and re-harmonizations of the standards, plus rhythmic drive; Roberto Quintero’s in the rhythm section along with Joe McCarthy on drums. Very serious music.
