Sadly, Soy is not as good (from a salsa standpoint, anyway) as the last studio album, Decisión Unanime, and certainly not as good as the breakthrough Travesía. There are some fine dance floor burners here, including “Mi Salsa”, but there is a certain tendency on many of the numbers to start off slow and syrupy, the kind of pop-romantica sound that makes my skin crawl; the coros also sound fake and overdone. Gone is the dynamism and the incredible pyrotechnics of Travesía, and there is no Eddie Palmieri like on Decisión Unanime to lend some much needed old-school grit. That said, I certainly enjoyed the album’s funky opening cut “Yo Te Queria Querer” immensely, partly because it reminds me of Manuelle’s great cover version of “Che Che Colé”, a spot-on collaboration with Tego Calderon from the Los Cocorocos album. In fact Tego makes an unannounced cameo on a track on Soy, so no doubt some of those experiences are rubbing off on Manuelle. Aside from a small clutch of salsa tunes, the rest of the album is packed with pop-ballad filler, which is a disappointment. Manuelle has a lot of talent and high production values behind him, so the potential is there for a balanced mix of gloss and grit – just not this time around. Still worth getting anyway if you are a DJ because people will be begging you to play something off the new Victor Manuelle album! Half-Highly Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-07-07)
