Plena Al Salsero - Live In Monterrey, Mexico

Editor's Pick:
Plena Libre, what a fantastic band. The recording catches the group live, and it simply rocks. From the first tune, "Tumbalakatin," a five-minute work out on plena rhythms, the band just nails it. Super tight coros fly over plena and bomba rhythms, and a pile of good singers who never forget that rhythm is the point. The band was brought together in the mid-90s, to work with traditional Puerto Rican rhythms; as heard on the disc, the band’s absorbing all sorts of musical influences, including salsa and other Caribbean music. But everywhere is percussion and great singing and improvisation, and whether the band’s stretching out to Latin jazz or working over Van Van’s "Sandunguera," it’s all pretty great, a portrait of one of the Caribbean’s most powerful groups. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-07-08)
