The Salsa Dura Show
CD (Avail Recordings 5000), Released 2008;
Editor's Pick:
The Salsa Dura Show is an internet-based radio program put together each week by California-based DJ/collector Nick Aguirre. He’s been “on air” for several years now impressing global salsa fans with his insanely deep knowledge and gigantic record collection. Nick’s show is a part of a larger podcast done by Andres Padua, the Bronx born impresario behind the reissue series on Latin Soul Records, as well as The Latin Soul Show on-line radio program, and the web site that hosts it all, www.hardsalsa.com. Like his radio show, Nick sticks to super-obscure 60s-70s bands on small labels, and there are several revelations here that will surely please both the hard-core salsa dura fans, and eager beginners. If you are tired of the same old artists and labels on the commercial compilations, look no further. Perhaps some of the young bands and singers out today might consider listening to this CD and be inspired to leave the pop-salsa and reggaeton alone. Anyway, you can dance to all these selections, or study them for their tasty arrangements, funky sounds, or interesting lyrics – either way, this is a great collection for everybody. The only four tracks on here I was previously familiar with were the killer Wayne Gorbea, incredibly fabulous Cabrerita (with what sounds like Melcochita on vocals?), happy-go-lucky La Perla, and the street-smart cult faves, Dax Pacem. The really top notch new discoveries were Orquesta Esencia (hard-hitting dance floor material), Johnny El Bravo (crazy raw stuff – like punk or garage salsa!), and Orquesta La Dominante, with its cool electric piano and moving lyrics. The sound quality varies, but that’s to be expected. Think of this as a rare glimpse into the mind of one of our great collectors and DJs, Nick Aguirre. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-07-10)
