There are a handful of excellent salsa gorda tracks on this brand spanking new Orquesta Mulenze release that will most definitely get the party started and keep you swinging through the night. Mulenze is one of my favorite Puerto Rican-based salsa orchestras, so it’s nice to see they are still in top form and have not completely “sold out” to the demons of salsa monga or pop balada. For me, I prefer the harder sounding arrangements that feature more straight up traditional Latin vocals (with less pop/r&b influence), so the standout cuts this time around are: “Maldición,” “El Que Tiene Un Pollo,” “Demuéstrame Que Tú Sabes,” and “Quisiera.” Lyrically speaking, the romantic songs are pretty trite and boring (as they often are in salsa), but the music never gets dull. There are no real surprises or experiments, or ‘stand out’ instrumental soloing, but that doesn’t really matter. Edwin “Mulenze“ Morales has been delivering solid salsa for more than 2 decades, and he plays some fat bass that stands out for its rich tone and commanding tumbao. Pianist Eric Figueroa keeps the whole thing tight, while congueros Cachiro Thompson, Jimmy Garcia and Jimmie Morales, and bongocero Charlie Sierra make sure there is plenty of skin slapping. The brass is nice – no raw, heavy moñas, but definitely swingin.’ The vocalists (Wichi Camacho, Juan Garcia and Rafi Andino) are well-seasoned experienced guys, and all sing with that nasal, ‘afro’ tone that makes you feel good and sounds “autentico.” Make sure, if you purchase this great new album, to go back and do some history lessons by picking up the reissued Desde El Principio from 1980. With this new album, Mulenze is back and ready “Para El Mundo Entero.”
