Some of us loved Maria Victoria’s first album, Asi Soy Yo, from 2002, a rocking son/salsa slab of Cuban funkiness. Along comes Santa Lucia, and damn, this is someone who can sing, and while Asi Soy Yo was the sound of a sonera working out with a house wrecking band, Santa Lucia is much more programmatic, much more thought out, and finally more a work of art and less a document of fundamental music making. She starts out with a piece that puts the flamenco cajon in the band; there are pieces that sound like classic Cuban trio performances, and sucu sucu. And she can blast, in the Cuban woman mold. Backed by Clasicos del Son, she sounds totally at home in traditional sones, and doing more experimental things. In a perfect world the woman could be a Cuban version of say, a Fado singer on the international circuit, or Cesaria Evora from the Cape Verdes. And when she starts her soneos, she eats up a tune, the way a tenor saxophonist, on fire, can chew through a tough set of changes. It’s impressive, and satisfying, and I pretty much want to hear this all day long. A real piece of art.
