***Best of 2008 Editors Pick Award*** Collectors, mambophiles and listeners of amazing music unite. Emusica made a good decision hiring Puente's compadre Joe Conzo to curate a series of double cd sets that encompass the complete trove of TP's Tico recordings. This first volume, containing 40 tracks will leave you gasping for more. Here's what our friend, and Puente disciple, Phil Riggio has to say... "Alabao, you all! Maybe I've lived this long for a reason: Here comes The Complete Tito Puente 78's Vol. 1, a 2-CD set of his earliest on Tico, which means beaucoup hot stuff Reissueland has neglected to put on CD before, including (but not limited to) the ethereal "Un corazon," whose singer was NEVER listed in the old days but is Johnny Lopez. Now, buy and anticipate the further volumes when TP goes from small-group & less ambitious to the Great 1950's TP Tico Superband, which (I think) started with Vicentico Valdes's last with TP, "Mambo en Blues" & "Guaguancó en Tropicana," goes on with Gilberto to "Picao y tostao" (you won't want to be that hen) & the impossible swinger "Bambarambambam" and knocks you out till he goes back to RCA with the principally instrumental tours-de-force from the vibe-led & vibeless big big band such as ALL those cha-cha-chas and the absolute epitome of the Mambo Age in NY, "Mambo City" (done live on Joe Conzo's live sessions CD - but THIS is out of this world!). The CD cover is updated artwork from one of those 10" LP covers. Whatever, this is a HYPERSUPERDUPERMUSTHAVE, even though a lot of these very early ones have already been on CD thanks to Tumbao, other Euros and Sonido Inc. (limited to those old chestnuts that got on 12" in the mid-50's). But don't wait - grab this one because you shouldn't miss the "Tico" start of a helluva ride! And make these guys rich so they'll keep the series going! !Y dice...!" — Phil Riggio Very Highly Recommended. (BP, 2010-09-25)
