Editor's Pick:
Here’s a ferociously swinging set by the trumpeter Pete Rodriguez, El Conde’s son. With the help of David Sanchez on tenor saxophone, Luis Perdomo on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ricardo Rodriguez on bass, Henry Cole on drums and Roberto Quintero on percussion, the trumpeter charges into hardcore jazz from the 60s, deep and profound music that conjures up the sound of Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard, with touches of free jazz. It’s intense, and great to hear Sanchez and Perdomo stretch out in a straight ahead context, with good compositions — all by Rodriguez — that aren’t overly fussy, but don’t descend into Perdido territory. I guess this is, at this point, a blowing session on challenging material that doesn’t get in the way by some of the heaviest musicians in New York who come from a Latin background but are more than capable of playing American jazz at the highest levels. Only a handful of people in that school; pick this album up before it disappears. Historic stuff. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-10-01)
