Editor's Pick:
Trumpeter Julito Alvarado's past releases concentrate on Latin jazz, but now he's gone and produced a full-blooded Puerto Rican salsa album. Some of the vocals remind me of Oscar d’Leon, and the full brass sound is nice – it is always great to hear that baritone sax hitting the low register while the ‘bones gallop along and the trumpets slice through with the high notes. The opening jam “Está Vivita” reminds you that straight-ahead salsa is not dead, and “Bacalao” is one of those great food-themed songs that Latin music seems to do so well. There is also a plena, and some softer romantic salsa. With pianist Reynaldo Burgos, bassist Alexis Figueroa, percussionists Manolito Rodriguez, Javier "Tito" Alvarez and Rubén Benitez. Recommended.
