Those of us fans of modern Cuban music pretty much pray at the alter of Pupy, the man who helped invent the sound of the band Los Van Van, and who split off in 2001 to form his own group. We love the wall of sound of his group, the non-stop grind of the charanga/timba mix, the complex harmonies, the intensity and the fantastic rhythm invention. Finally, Pupy has his own sound, a band that’s identifiable at 100 yards. Tranquilo gives us everything we want, all of the above. But Pupy’s experimenting, leaving a lot more space in the music, allowing for different emotional stances. Omara Portuondo shows up, as does the flautist Joaquin Oliveras. As does the roar; halfway through Se Parece a Aquel, the place blows up, just like it should, violins and brass roaring, the rhythm section chugging away over broken rhythms, the singer, all nasal, egging everyone one. Again, this stuff is brilliant dance music, probably the most musically informed dance music on
the planet, totally literate, totally functional, totally achieved. Grab it while it exists, support intelligence.
