Good to see that Miguel A. ‘Meñique’ Barcasnegras still has his pinky standing straight up in the air! Here we have a brand spanking Nuevo release by the legendary Panamanian sonero who has recorded with Kako, Tito Puente, Arsenio Rodriguez, Willie Rosario, and Charlie Palmieri, and composed many important songs over the years (“Niña y Señora”, “Salsa y Sabor”). Here he is in great form, interpreting his own compositions, recording in Florida, backed by a great batch of salsa veterans, including bassist Eddie "Gua-Gua" Rivera (who takes a nice solo on “Sonero Añejo”), pianists Gino Picart Jr. and Eddie Lebrón, percussionist David Gonzaléz, trombonist Harry Rios and others. He’s not one to kick back and act like a senior citizen, that’s for sure. Though he admits in one song that he’s been singing for over 60 years, he still hits the high notes, and can improvise with the best of ‘em. He pays homage to Mike Amadeo in one cut, does the required shout out to collectors and Colombian fans, and sings of tangled emotions and lost love on the one hand and partying till dawn on the other. “Mi Muñequita de Carne y Hueso” is a very hot track and on my DJ playlist. My one quibble is the recording quality at times sounds too digital in the treble, or muffled in the bass, but that won’t matter if it’s blasting from your car stereo or the club sound system – this is authentic music by a seasoned band and an old master vocalist, designed for fun, not scientific dissection.
