If you dig Nuyorican Latin Funk at its hardest, if you loved Eddie Palmieri’s “Harlem River Drive,” the Boogaloo Combo from Brazil, or Joe Bataan’s “Salsoul” album, then you will surely go wild with the newest platter from Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul label. Bronx River Parkway: Latin soul with authentic Puerto Rican coros, in the pocket trap drums, tasty horn riffs that will remind you of a cross between the 60s Stax soul sound and early Lebron Brothers, Joe Cuba, Willie Colon, Roena’s Apollo Sound, Ray Barretto (think of “Together”) and Ocho. But this album is fresh, catchy, original too – your baby niece will be dancing right alongside your granny! Pablo Rodriguez of Candela Records, Leon Michels of Truth & Soul, and Rostarr merge the raw, soulful aesthetic of funk and soul with traditional Puerto Rico sounds. Candela normally releases a lot of salsa club music; this is the first collaboration that was not touched by a sampler or a drum machine. Lots of great musicianship, classic Spanish language vocals, a unique but pleasantly retro sound. There is also a hard-core traditional percussion rumba selection appropriately called “Para Los Rumberos” that shows you where the original funk comes from.
