Willie Colón

Siembra - Special Edition
CD (Fania Codigo 507078), Released 1978; Re-Issued 2010
Editor's Pick:
If there was a salsa equivalent to the Beatles iconic and critically acclaimed White Album, it would be Siembra, the 1978 Willie Colón and Rubén Blades collaboration that rendered the accepted notions of "salsa" obsolete. Fania has reissued this pivotal work and has included some very special features that I'll get to in just a bit. As Augustin Gurza suggests in his astute liner notes, "...Siembra ranges in a class of its own. Even though it was the best selling salsa album of its era, other musicians knew it would be futile to copy it. For in many ways, Siembra was a magical work, the product of a unique time and place that even its own creators never attempted to duplicate..." It included "Plastico," the satiric look at disco and its vapid lifestyle, as well as the nearly 7-1/2 minute "phono-novela" called "Pedro Navaja" about a street thug who accosts a prostitute and learns about the notion of what-goes-around-comes-around. Its amazing arrangement, by Luis "Perico" Ortiz, loosly based on "Mack the Knife," is so dynamic that it is still, to this day, one of the most often requested salsa tracks.
Lots has been written about Siembra, so the only thing I will add here is that the Special Edition comes with five previously unreleased bonus tracks. This is *BIG* news for collectors and aficionados who will have never heard these tracks before. There's alternative takes on "Dime" and "Pedro Navaja," a completely new track called "Ligia Elena" that didn't make it to the final album, an interesting instrumental edit of "Plástico" as well as a Joe Claussell Remix of "Siembra." As far as I know, the inclusion of alternate takes is a first for a classic salsa reissue.
Very Highly Recommended. (BP, 2010-06-08)
