Editor's Pick:
Manolo Mairena is a New England based salsa singer and conguero who originally hails from Costa Rica. He counts Oscar D’Leon, Orquesta Reve, and Maraca among his favorite artists, and with Mi Oportunidad, he should definitely be getting the opportunity he deserves. Mairena is active on the Boston scene, having played with La Clave Secreta, Mango Blue, Balaton, and others. This is a solid dance album chock full of different influences and styles, from straight up contemporary commercial salsa to Cuban timba, from old school charanga to son montuno (with some nice tres by Berbardo Hernandez), and all the while featuring tasty Latin jazz piano solos by Gonzalo Grau and nice percussion breaks by Mairena himself. Manolo’s vocal style ranges from the traditional to the contemporary as well, and there are times during the montuno when the sound really heats up. Overall a diverse and enjoyable debut disk. Recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2008-11-11)
