Armando "Mandy" Cantero

Hay Que Luchar
Import CD (Lujuria 009), Released 2008;
Editor's Pick:
Cuban salsa-timba doesn't get much better than this. Mandy Cantero sports pretty darn good credentials: former singer for Charanga Forever (a spin-off of Charanga Habanera) and then for Pupy y Los Que Son Son. On this, his debut project as a leader, he's joined by primo bassist Pedro Pablo who is also the project's musical director. And the Pedro Pablo stamp is clearly embedded: with smart arrangements that underscore the importance of excellent musicianship, this project is much more than your typical timba fare. Hay Que Luchar features all original tracks, mostly by Cantero, and is backed by pianist Karina Gutierrez, conguero Frank Ramirez, timbal player Jorge Felix Bravo, trumpeter J.A. Chappottín "El Niño" as well as corositas Tirso Duarte, Mario Gavilán, Michel Pérez, and Jesus Madera. Highly Recommended. (BP, 2009-01-04)
