Wow. Doesn’t take but about a second to hear the heated nature of this rumba, which just rocks from beginning to end. The first tune’s an often heard chant for Elegua; the six member group then works through originals and Los Dias Pasan, by Gilberto Santa Rosa and a bunch of tributes to Carlos Embale, Elio Reve and Merceditas Valdes (and Chano Pozo, though he’s not given credit in the liner notes). There’s tons of arranging here, rhythmic feints and accents to leave big chunks of open space. The coro, which includes a woman, Arianna Saboriu Martinez (who takes the lead on a tune), just tears up the music, completely unafraid to supercharge the proceedings. Not that the percussion lays back, either; this is not a sleepy recording, this stuff just takes the paint off the room. Anybody looking for the glories of the African Atlantic can stop here; this is as good as it gets. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2009-04-01)
