Pedro Martinez & Roman Diaz

The Routes Of Rumba / Rumbos De La Rumba
CD (RWR Round Whirled 509694), Released 2009;
Editor's Pick:
The real rumba is a miraculous and beautiful Afro-Cuban cultural and religious manifestation that is rarely captured on recording in all its sonic glory. Notable historic recordings of rumba include albums by Patato and Totico, Los Muñequitos, Los Papines, Alberto Zayas, Clave y Guaguancó, Yoruba Andabo, and Festival In Havana by Ignacio Piñero. Now the incredibly talented Pedro Martínez and Román Díaz have joined the pantheon with the best Afro-Cuban rumba recording in recent memory. What makes The Routes of Rumba stand out from the rest is that it is a “concept album” that takes the listener through the entire rumba experience, from the emotional to the physical, from the sacred to the profane. There are moments on this CD where you will go into a trance, and others where you want to get up and dance. The depth of vision this brilliant approach to rumba represents is due of course to the fabulous duo of Martínez and Díaz (and their guest Alfredo Díaz “Pescao”), but also to the project’s producer, Berta Jottar, PhD. Dr. Jottar, who is a professor of Latino/a Studies at Williams College, asked Pedrito and Román to interpret rumba’s deep conceptual elements, tracing an arc from Africa to Havana to NYC and beyond, with each track clearly dedicated to different “psychic spaces” in the Diaspora. Jottar also put together a beautiful art piece for the cover. The clarity of sound, which makes you feel like you are a part of the rhythm and voices, is courtesy of Kamilo Kratc, the genius engineer on La Excelencia’s new album. Liner notes enhance the project as well. A bonus interactive media component lets you experience each drum sound independently, and there is a video of an acappella percussion duet that is great fun. Whether you are just getting to know rumba, wish to enlighten yourself about the Afro-Cuban roots of Latin music, or are a serious student of the drum, this is the CD. Very highly recommended.
