Panama is a unique crossroads of cultures, a country created by colonial powers to suit their ambitions of empire building, told by a history drenched in blood, but vibrant with a creative mix of Latino mestizo natives, and immigrants from everywhere from China and India to Jamaica and the Middle East. Roberto Ernesto Gyemant has done exhaustive research into this little-known and incredibly exciting world where cumbia, funk, soul, bugalú, salsa, calypso, samba (!), reggae, and folkloric chants and drumming all co-exist and intermingle with a beguiling and graceful fusion. Along with trailblazer Miles Cleret and the always fabulous Soundway label, Gyemant has given us every collector’s wet dream: obscure Latin music that is hard to categorize, and is as great as we’d hoped it would be, and more! Most of this material is from the golden period of the late 60s – early 70s, so the music here is hard-core, with fuzz and wah-wah guitars, blaring brass, funky beats, and gritty vocals. It’s original, beautiful, and authentic. Each cut is a revelation, a gem, a surprise, from the fabulous re-imagining of Willie Colon’s “La Murga” (done here in ‘típico’ style with accordion!), to early boogaloo recordings of Azuquita and Meñique. Top it off with yet another deluxe informative booklet chock full of photos and you have one of the most fascinating releases of the year. Be not cowardly, my tireless Latin music enthusiasts: this is one voyage of discovery you’ll want to make, from the Afro-Atlantic port of Colón all the way through the interior to the other side of the isthmus, Panama City.
