Editor's Pick:
"Suena La Conga" shout the coroistas on "Pachangueando," the second track on Lo Nuestro's new release of the same name. Their brand of hard salsa dura encompasses original material like that track by percussionist Javier Ortega, as well as material borrowed from the canon of great Latin dance tracks: "La Esencia Del Guanguancó" (Tite Curet Alonso), "Así Fue Que Nació El Son" (Gene Hernandez), "En Buenaventura" (Joe Quijano) and Guillermo Rodriguez Fiffe's "Bilongo", here framed by the flutework of Angel Onofre. At its best, Lo Nuestro's rootsy side shines with a patina that channels the essence of classic salsa. There is, also, a uniquely Colombian affinity to the faster, more basic structure of modern pachanga/booglaoo styles that are typified by more commercial bands like Carruseles and King Bongo. The mix keeps the dancers on their feet. Yes, folks, Colombia is in the house, and Lo Nuestro wants to get the party started. Highly Recommended. (BP, 2009-09-22)
