The nephew of El Sonero Mayor, Ismael Rivera, has, in a very short time, risen high in the ranks of my personal salsa heroes. Bloodline or not, this guy can really sing in the classic sonero style. While his range is not the widest, it is resonant with soul and sabor and a perfect fit for this repertoire of iconic tracks by Javier Vazquez, Roberto Anglero, Rafael Ithier and, yes, Ismael Rivera ("Amor Salvaje") who, I venture to imagine, would be proud. This is the stuff of great and memorable salsa, and even non-believers are starting to come around. You just have to listen. Take a look at his band here: pianist Luis Marin, percussionists Sammy Garcia, William "Cachiro" Thompson, Richy Bastar and Charlie Sierra, bassist Efrain Hernandez and other top-drawer musicians. Not to mention his coro section: Gerardo Rivas, Charlie Donato and the great salsa legend Gilberto Santa Rosa.
