Codigo's latest is a superlative 2-CD compilation of the venerable bugalú-salsa bandleader Joe Cuba. The percussionist made a huge cross-over splash with tracks like "Bang Bang," "El Pito (I'll Never Go Back to Georgia)," "A Las Seis," "My Man Speedy" and a truck-load more. This finely remastered selection of 34 tracks encompasses his iconic work from the '60s and '70s, and highlights the vocalists Cheo Feliciano, Jimmy Sabater and Willie Torres. Cuba's contribution is embellished by his selection of these vocalists, guys who became superstars themselves. Many of the hits are associated with the singers as much as, or, in some cases, even more, than Cuba himself. Sabater's rendition of "To Be With You" or Cheo's "Ariñañara" immediately come to mind. This collector's must-have includes material recorded for Tico, Mardi-Gras and Seeco. Liner notes, in both English and Spanish, by Bobby Marín.
