Best of 2012 Award Winner

Man! What a hugely dynamic project! Here, folks, one of the finest sessions of essential Colombian grooves we have ever come across. Getting iconic musicians like Alfredro Linares and Fruko, Michi Sarmiento and Anibal Velasquez together to record under the roof of the legendary Fuentes recording studio, producers Mario Galeano and Will Holland have done something remarkable here. The result, at times, feels something like a Colombian version of the late '50s Cuban jam sessions of Cachao and Niño Rivera. There's a looseness and a sense of experimentation here that is lacking in most of today's over-produced releases. This is amazing stuff, with funky, tipsy blends of cumbia, bomba, descarga, salsa and jazz (If Raymond Scott were a member of Afrosound, something like Remando would have resulted). All with a potency that resonates throughout the entire project. I dare suggest that Ondatropica just might be the best release of the year, thus far. It's a knockout, a must-have. And, Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Some more info from the superb liners...
Conceived by Colombian musician Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will ‘Quantic’ Holland, Ondatrópica brings together an all-star cast representing both the classic and modern styles of la musica Colombiana.
Over 3 weeks in January 2012 at the famous Discos Fuentes studios in Medellín legendary figures from Colombian music joined a group of younger Colombian musicians that included members of both Mario’s band Frente Cumbiero and Quantic’s Combo Barbaro. The plan; “to re-interpret the tropical musical heritage of Colombia with new approaches in composition, arrangement and production in a classic and mythical setting.”
For the recording Will and Mario were joined by Colombian legends including big-hitting saxophonist Michi Sarmiento, multi-instrumentalist Fruko and accordion-playing don and singer Anibal Velasquez as well as a new wave of Colombian and South American musicians  such as Chilean MC Ana Tijoux and El Chongo, a young percussionist and beatboxer from the city of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast.
A mixture of well known and classic Colombian styles such as cumbia, porro, gaita and champeta clash head-on with boogaloo, salsa, ska, beat-box, hip hop, dub and funk on the record. The tracks range from straight-up timeless pieces with one foot in the 1960s and 70s to progressive and forward-looking recordings firmly rooted in the 21st century.
Mario and Will also adopted a 100% analogue recording approach in tribute to a sound and feel that the studio had been lacking for some years now. (liners, 2012-08-02)
