In 1977 Papo Lucca added a new talent to his band, Yolanda Rivera on vocals, and she really shines on several numbers here, a case in point being the extremely hot salsa tune “La Rumba En El Patio.” Hopefully these reissues will give Yolanda more recognition. Luigi Texidor, who would leave the band the following year, also hits some vocal high marks, especially with the afro-flavored guaracha “Omele," Lucca shows his keyboard genius on every song, playing multiple instruments with verve and grace, effortlessly quoting the Afro-Antillean songbook, jazz (managing to scat quite well!), and classical music, all the while serving as the glue for a very dynamic and accomplished group of players (conguero “Little Johnny” Rivero is especially cookin’ here). It is no wonder DJ Guillo Droing named La Sonora ‘The Giants of The South.’ “Boranda” – originally an easy going Brazilian tune by Edu Lobo – manages to encapsulate the ‘Gigante Del Sur’s’ essence in its ingenious mix of effortlessly well-oiled swing, sophisticated arranging, and fiery African tumbao. As always, the liner notes by Jaime Torres Torres are informative and well written. The one bum note is the very dated-sounding disco track at the end – though even in that context, the musicians play their collective culitos off, wah-wahs and all.
