**CLASSICS REVISITED** A stone classic by one of salsa’s all time best interpreters, the Afro-Boricua singer Ismael Rivera, and his awesome band, Los Cachimbos. The album is chock full of amazing compositions, with a sound that just makes you want to dance. Beautiful Cuban ‘tres’ guitar, funky brass, percolating percussion, joyous piano, and darting in and out of the propulsive rhythms, the unique and beautiful voice of ‘Maelo. He manages to combine a weary, melancholy gruffness with a smoky, soulful joy, a feat that seems to effortlessly express the ups and downs of life, especially from the perspective of someone of African Diasporic descent. Contains “Las Caras Lindas”, a Latin Pride anthem written by Puerto Rico’s poet of song, Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso. In addition, “La Perla” sings of the ghetto shanty-town, called “La Perla”, situated on the outskirts of Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan, buffeted by the sea, where Rivera comes from. That’s him on the cover, sitting on the porch of his mother’s shack. It may be humble and run-down, but, as the cover and album title attest, it is his! (“Esto Sí Es Lo Mío”). Very highly recommended. (Pablo Yglesias, 2010-09-01)
