Mongo was one of the greatest all around musicians the world has ever known, and it is refreshing to hear 40,000 salsa fans give him that recognition that he surely deserved but didn’t always get from la gente in the 70s. This reissue is a stunningly intense 1974 live performance that comes from the historic Fania Allstars concert at Yankee stadium. There is some baaadass 70s jazz-funk on here, plus some hard core instrumental salsa, and an interesting “new rhythm” called “Coyulde,” voiced in Zulu by a South African diva named Thoko that will put you in mind of the “Pata Pata” days of Miriam Makeba. Features bassist William Allen, pianist José Madrid, Jimmy Rivera on drums and timbales, Colombian sax and flute player Justo Almario, Héctor Veneros on alto and bari sax (and flute), and Pablo Rosario on bongo. With arrangments by Mongo, Marty Sheller, William Allen and Luis Gasca. Latin funk rare groove alert!! Great sound quality and excellent liner notes put you there on that historic sweltering August night in ‘74.
