1980's Maelo was Rivera's eleventh album for Tico Records since he made his solo debut with the label in 1968. Tragically it was to be his last complete project. As was the case with many of Maelo's albums, Cuban pianist and composer Javier Vázquez, the musical director of his band Los Cachimbos, wrote all the arrangements.
