One of the prized gems of classic salsa, the 1972 Que Viva La Musica is considered by many to be Ray Barretto's masterpiece. And with tracks like "Cocinando," "La Pelota," "Que Viva La Musica," and "Alafia Cumaye," it's hard to argue the point. With Luis Cruz on piano (he also co-arranged the record), timbalero Orestes Vilato, and vocals by the great Adalberto Santiago. This one, folks, is Very Highly Recommended. (BP)
"One of the most important Ray albums. Here's 'Cocinando,' you all."
— Phil Riggio, 98/99 Catalog
"'Cocinando' was the opening theme for the movie 'Our Latin Thing.'"
— Max Salazar, 98/99 Catalog
"Yours truly named this man 'Mr. Hard Hands' back in the 70s. 'Que Viva La Musica' and 'Cocinando' are just two of the outstanding numbers on this CD."
— Joe Gaines, 96/97 Catalog
"A truly great percussionist and musician, Ray has always made great recordings. This particular LP has some classic Barretto songs as well as his original swinging band with Vilato, Rene Lopez and Adalberto on vocals."
— Larry Harlow, 96/97 Catalog
" I could never exist in a world without Barretto's "Cocinando." For me, it is the number one tune of the 70s."
