Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: Just in! DVD & CD package of the legendary Sonora Ponceña's 50th anniversary concert at the jam-packed Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez de Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Recorded in February 2004, this is a well-produced multi-camera presentation featuring the Ponceña big band led by maestro Papo Lucca. Singer Héctor "Pichie" Pérez opens the show with a full-torque rendition of "Ecue Baroni" that should not be missed. Pérez is joined by singers Danny Davila, Fernando "Wito" Colón, Edwin Rosas and, finally, Luisito Carrion - who's the guest singer on "Yare". The show includes some pretty impressive on-stage salsa dancing by a young troupe, as well as some very special appearances by bassist, Bobby Valentin, trumpeter Luis "Luisito" Aquino and pianist Lenny Prieto who solos on "Piano Salsero" — a track dedicated to Papo Lucca. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

PAPA NOEL
Café Noir
Tumi (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA INTERNATIONAL; AFRICA
EditorsPick: Wanna feel good? Play this CD. Café Noir is a glorious interplay of African and Latin rhythms ...a musical celebration of life, and a non-stop, honey flavored dance party. While reviewing this CD my daughters walked in and immediately started dancing. A good sign. Kickin' Congolese rumbas, Zoukous-son and Afro-Cuban infused compositions. With Palma-Ernesto Reyes from Cuba's Los Jovenes Clasico Del Son. The back liners say it best: "After the success of the first Bana Congo release (Tumi CD 107) Papa Noel returns with another cross-border collaboration in which he brings African and Cuban rumba unto the 21st Century, reuniting their creative energies and celebrating their common heritage in a set of songs spiced by the Cuban tres of Coto-Antonio Machin Garcia and the saxophone of Cameroonian maestro Manu ('Makossa man') Dibango. Dance, dance, dance to the gloriously rich music of Café Noir — a gozar no más!" Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

PAQUITO GUZMAN
Los Dos Paquitos: Paquito Acosta & Paquito Guzmán
Envidia (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: Wow! Here's an unexpected salsa treasure. Two heavy hitter Paquitos join forces to create a powerhouse release that has the unshakable foundation of pianist and musical director Willie "Mundial" Sotelo (Los Protangonistas, La Puertorriqueña etc., etc.) at the helm. It's been quite a number of years since veteran singer Paquito Guzman has been on the scene — and what a pleasure to have him back in the fold. I've never heard him on such a killer salsa release as this — even during his tenure with Tommy Olivencia. Man, I see him in a whole new light here. Same for Paquito Acosta who, much younger than Guzmán, also sang with Olivencia essentially replacing Frankie Ruiz. Together Los Dos Paquitos sound unstoppable, with each track sounding more pumped then the previous — a brilliant concept brought to fruition by producer Luis Dominguez. Features conguero William "Kachiro" Thompson, bongocero Pucho Hernandez, bassist Pedro Perez and other top players. The steel girder of coro is made up of Jerry Rivas, Henry Santiago, and Rei Peña "El Sonero De La Consola." Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

GRUPO CARIBE
Somos Caribeños
CMS Records
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Led by pianist Sergio Rivera, Grupo Caribe has been producing first-class salsa since 1996. They have earned the respect of not only the dancers but from other musicians as well. Fronted here by singers Luisito Ayala, Hermán Olivera and Tito Allen, the group continues to solidify their reputation as the standard bearers for deeply rooted New York salsa fuerza. It can be said that Grupo Caribe evolved from the highly acclaimed Cruz Control led by timbalero Ray Cruz. Grupo Caribe members like Rivera, percussionist Louis Bauzo and singers Ayala and Olivera all hailed from Cruz Control, and they've kept the spirit, drive and, especially, the integrity way high. Terrific arrangements by Ray Santos, Jose Febles, Gil Lopez, Jose Madera and others who clearly keep the dancers as their main priority. This is the kind of salsa record I can play over and over again and never tire of. With tracks like "Saludando", "Homeaje A Los Bailadores", "Tambo La Rumba", "Negro De Sociedad", and "Bongo" (listen to Louis Bauzo work out on this one) there is zero filler material here. Also with bassists Ruben Rodíguez and Willie Cintron, sax player Pete Miranda, trombonist Raul Navarrette, and others — this one is a big DJ Alert and a salsa lover's Must-Have. With good liners by Chico Alvarez Peraza, too. Absolutely Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

FRANKIE MORALES & ORQUESTA
A Toda Velocidad
Muziq Records
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Toda Velocidad from Frankie Morales and his Mambo of the Times Orchestra is a crate-full of killer New York style salsa dura. Morales can place his clear vocal register pretty high up there — he reminds me a bit of a young Adalberto Santiago. He sang for Son Boricua, Jimmy Bosch, Pablo "Chino" Nuñez, Tito Puente, Las Estrellas Cobo (formerly Estrellas Caiman) and The Bad Street Boys. Not too shabby. On this project, he's got arrangement by Willie Ruiz, Charlie Garcia, Máximo Rodriguez, Ray Santos, Louie Cruz, José Madera and others. His band is made up of local heroes: Eddie Montalvo — who's own history defines salsa in this town (Fania All Stars, Rubén Blades & Willie Colón, Lavoe, Pacheco, etc.) on congas, Ray Vega on trumpet, bassist Danny Rosado, pianist Joaquin Diaz, — but, wait! Did I mention his special guests? Alfredo De La Fé, Pablo "Chino" Nuñez, Dave Valentine, Richie Bastar, Junior Rivera on tres and others. And a red-hot coro section made up of Willie Ruiz, Gilbert Velazquez, Eddie Rosado, Jenny Colón and Ernie Acevedo. A big DJ Alert and... Highly Recommended. (BP)

RAY MARTINEZ
Alto Nivel - Ray Martinez Y Sabor Criollo
Tropical Note/TNP
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Pristine new salsa release by respected bassist Ray Martinez. Ray has been relied upon by the likes of Ray Barretto, Son Café, Mongo Santamaria, Son Boricua, Direct Latin Influence, and Ricardo Lemvo. This guy has been around the block a few times. On Alto Nivel, Ray peppers original material with compositions by Rubén Blades ("Amor Pa' Que"), J.P. Torres ("Sonero Con Clave") and Charlie Palmieri ("Mambo Show"). This is a serious powerhouse, folks, and he's got some tough players to boot: Ralphy Irizarry on timbal, Edwin Sánchez on piano, trumpeters Peter Nater, Richie Viruet and many others. Great job by singer Renzo Padilla, who is backed by a coro section featuring Ray Viera and Jorge Maldnado. Some top guests appear: Oscar Hernández, Richie Flores, Luis Rodríguez and more. MAÑA
¡Por Fin…Maña! Comenzó La Fiesta
Maña/RR
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: The Bronx-based band Maña were co-founded in 2001 by New York salsa stalwarts Ray Rosado and Victor Maldonado. Ray is the longtime composer, arranger, chorus singer and hand percussionist with the Bronx-based pianist and bandleader Wayne Gorbea and Victor has played percussion with the likes of Gene Hernández' Orquesta Novedades, Yomo Toro, Tito Nieves, Miles Peña and Johnny Ray. "Maña's mission is to continue the salsa dura tradition, doing their part to keep it alive, with original material as well as covers," says Ray. After a break of two days I listened to Por Fin for a third time, and discovered that "Azucaré" and " Comenzó La Fiesta", both written and arranged by Ray, had already insinuated themselves into my system. Then Ray's re-working of the Arsenio Rodríguez classic "Monte Adentro" hit me! Ray is a cunning fox, because the album is real grower, and this is the knack of his arrangements. They imperceptibly get under your skin. Maña's sound can be reminiscent of Wayne Gorbea, but that is no bad thing and not surprising in view of Ray's creative input to Wayne's bands over the years. Deep swing (to borrow Peter Watrous's apt expression) pervades. There should put an advisory sticker on the CD case saying "Guaranteed to be addictive after just three plays!!" I'm going to put it back on again... Very highly recommended. (Read the complete unedited review here) (John Child)

HAVANA POWER BAND
Timba Y Corazón
Envidia (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Here's an gem of a timba release. The high voltage Havana Power Band is comprised of ex-Havana City members who, in turn, were former members of Dan Den. The lineage speaks for itself: Havana Power has evolved into one of the Cubas's best modern bands. They are the pure definition of Timba, as typified by tracks like the no-holds-barred "Pobre Diabla", "Me Vuelves Loco" or the opening track "No Le Eches La Culpa" with its Charanga Habana meets Van Van feel. Like some other top Cuban dance bands — Bamboleo for example, Havana Power Band peppers in a few non-timba numbers to show the extent of their chops. "Leguina Blues" is a hard-driving jazz-descarga and "Time After Time" is a slow-boiling charanga. Don't be fooled... this leads right into "Yo Soy Tu Hombre" — bassist Raul Cabrera's personal statement in pure fiery timba vernacular. Features vocalists Evelio Jaz, Jorge Rodriguez "El Gafas" and rapper Michelito "El Vaticano". Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

MEL MARTINEZ
Pa' La Calle
Envidia (original import)
Originally released: 2007
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: In the vein of, say, Los Protagonistas, La Sindicata or La Puertorriqueña, “Pa La Calle" is a power-punch of danceclub salsa that should be played loud for full effect. Produced by Willie Sotelo — the centerpiece of the aforementioned bands — whose thumbprint is all over this project. He’s pianist here, as well as author and arranger of many of the tracks including the opening gem “Como Tú No Hay Dos." Other arrangement muscle belongs to Pedro Pérez, Tito Rivera, Georgie Padilla, and Ricky Zayas. Mel Martinez, formerly simply “Mel," has grown more than a last name on “Pa’ La Calle." He’s also acquired a new level of chops and respect for handling this rocket ship band with apparent ease and and equal amount of bravado. Listen to his rendition of “Amor De Aquella Noche." But there’s a lot to like about Pa La Calle. Rigoberto Diaz’ timbal punching on Martinez’ own “El Comentario" for example. With trumpeter Rolando "Rolo" Alejandro, conguero William "Cachiro" Thompson, bongocero Carmelo Alvarez and bassist Pedro Pérez. And, like all of Willie Sotelo productions, there’s a killer coro section. This one is filled with Henry Santiago, Jerry Medina and Rei Pena. A force to be reckoned with. Salsa the way it ought to be. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

EditorsPick: What a great way to begin a new year! Calambuco, from Bogotá, Colómbia, has produced an infectious, finely crafted salsa-packed CD for the discerning listener and, of course, the dancers. I was at one of my distributors talking with conguero Papo Pepín when the track "Candelaria" started to blast through the stereo speakers. We both looked up and did as mutual "Wow!". Directed by pianist Andrés Felipe Succar, Calambuco is a first class band whose repertoire encompasses not only sizzling salsa like "Africa Salsera" but the slow-cooking "Guajira de Un Abandonado". Check out the heat on the descarga-mambo "Ritmo De Succar". Or listen to Santiago Jiménez' tres work on "Te Falta Ritmo". Como En El Barrio just may be one of the highlights of 2007. Each track here is a gem. With Angela (yes, Angela) Tapiero on timbales. She rocks. With liner notes by the esteemed writer Umberto Valverde. DJ Alert! Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

LEFTY PÉREZ
Salseros Unidos
EsNtion Latino
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Wow, a *new* CD from first-class salsero Lefty Pérez. With his clear, commanding, tenor voice, Pérez takes control of his blistering, ready-for-action band with apparent ease. Like a hot knife through butter, he cuts through pure danceclub tracks like "Salseros Unidos," "Mentiras" and "Mi Puerto Rico," — a few of the best numbers on this CD, with savvy. The dozen original tracks here — many written by Mr. Pérez and arranged, clearly with experienced salsa know-how — mostly by Milton Sesentón and Victor "Papo" Ortiz, are so good, it begs to ask "where has this guy been?" Check out the shear force he's able to create with his composition "Guaya Guaya" (with Alfredo De La Fe, no less, on violin). But the entire CD ranks right up there with some of the best salsa to have come out this year. There's simply no filler material here, no corn meal or drippy ballads. Just unadulterated, unrelenting, salsa virtuosity culminating with "Que Grata Reunion," the perfect ending to Salseros Unidos. On this track, Pérez is joined by some of salsa royalty: Richie Ray, Bobby Cruz, Giovanny Hidalgo, Nelson Gonzalez, Cheito Quinones, and Ruben Rodriguez. Yeah, no kidding. In summary, here's a potent, rich, double espresso disguised as a salsa CD — it will have your pulse rate up in seconds. And with none of his earlier solo work currently available, not even his previous release, the 1997 "Soy Tuyo," a new release by Lefty Pérez is a pretty big deal here. And this one's a killer, folks. A dance party supreme — a big DJ Alert! Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Sax/flute player and bandleader Ray Rodriguez has virtually guaranteed a high-caliber project with the assistance of seasoned arrangers like Willie Ruiz, Oscar Hernandez, Jose Febles and Paquito Pastor. This one has a finely-crafted, thoroughly professional polish to these hard-driving salsa tracks. Look no further than this capitol "S" salsa dura production that enlists top-choice vocalists Adalberto Santiago, Ray Sepulveda, Frankie Vazquez, Ray Bayona, and Jose "Cheo" Medina. With Back To The Classics, Cruz hand-picked some solid gold salsa cover tracks like the Bobby Valentin hit "La Boda De Ella," Eddie Palmieri's "Nada De Ti," Ismael Miranda's "Ahora Sí" and "Pá Bravo Yo" and Adalberto Alvarez' "Hepocrecia." Each track is a pure salsa dura gem, handled with respect and infused with swing and a heck of a lot of sabor. The project is equally impressive for its participating musicians with include bassist Rubén Rodriguez, conguero Eric Velez, trumpeters Nelson Jaime, Pete Nater, and cuatrista Pepe Castillo. Back To The Basics is a trip well worth taking. ALBERTO CAICEDO
La Voz De Colombia - Gerardo Rosales Presents: Alberto Caicedo
Walboomers (original import)
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA INTERNATIONAL
EditorsPick: Alberto Caicedo's debut salsa release as a leader is a tremendous effort that pays off big right from the opening track, the Gerardo Rosales composition "La Voz De Colombia." It's a fiery dance number in which the singer proclaims "Por que yo soy tu voz... Yo Soy Tu Voz." And he seems to mean it. This is an all-embracing project that commands respect not only for the singer's formidable abilities, but also for its lofty production standards. The level of musicianship here is top-drawer, and Caicedo's not afraid to think outside the box. Whether it's the timba-tinged "Este Amor Me Mata" or the use of Ulrich de Jesús' electric guitar which adds additional power to "Un Poquito de Amor" or the Jamaican spiced "El Suavecito." Most of the compositions are original, penned by either Caicedo or the Venezuelan bandleader and percussionist, maestro Gerardo Rosales. Rosales' own band, the respected Netherlands based Charanga La Crisis, are welcomed guests on two two tracks: Caicedo's interpretations of two killer classic covers Grupo Niche's "Cali Pachanguero" and "La Vida Es Un Carnaval," the sizzling track made popular by La Reina, Celia Cruz. This salsero has his scope set on big things. And from the sound of "La Voz De Colombia," he's off to a fine start. This is a classy salsa project with style, power and extra integrity. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

ANDY DURAN
Salsa Dura & Descarga: A Tribute To Fania - Live In Venezuela
Euro Compact (original import)
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; VENEZUELA
EditorsPick: Here's a really cool release jam packed with full, thick, salsa swing. Meticulously recorded live from Caracas, Venezuela, this pristine tribute to the legacy of '70s Fania and its musicians is yet another reminder of the staying power of classic compositions like "En Orbita," "Anacaona," "El Ratón," "Juan Pachanga," and "Ponte Dura." The tracks chosen here are clearly the cream of the Fania jams — descargas of the utmost intensity and heat generating capacity. Bandleader and director Andy Durán specifically points out in the liners that "All compositions, transcriptions and adaptations are based on original arrangements from Fania and its artists." They did a terrific job in this respect, staying true to not only the compositions but the spirit in which they were originally performed. With "Indio" Juan José Hernández and Jonathan Medina on vocals — listen to Medina's take on "Ublabadu" the Machito classic later interpreted by Héctor Lavoe. With guests Rogelia "Canelita" Medina (vocals), Ricardito Hernández (violin, coro), Jesús Bosque (vibes and percussion) and Héctor Adonay Castillo (guitar). This is a high caliber salsa celebration, replete with the best hooks and jams of a golden era, that should not be missed. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

SON DE CALI
Cambiando La Historia
Sony/Norte
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: The heart of Son De Cali are vocalists Javier Vásquez and Willy Garcia (Garcia also wrote all of the tracks). Veterans of Colombia's Grupo Niche, these guys have been around the block a few times. And if they know anything, it's how to construct a salsa tune. And here they go again — man, if they weren't salseros they'd probably be full-time pyromaniacs: these boys like to play with fire. Check the heat generated by "Me Emociones," "Que No Pasó" or pretty much any track on this CD. This is the stuff of danceclub bliss, and if you're a DJ, I would suggest that you begin your shopping cart with Cambiando La Historia. It's a great big DJ Alert. In fact, you just might want to check out their previous two releases as well — all primo salsa. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: If you're looking for an adrenaline boost, grab this debut release by New York salsero Manny Mieles. It's a pumped-up, high energy, take-no-prisoners danceclub project. Mieles, who you may recall, was the lead vocalist on Little Johnny Rivero's acclaimed recent release Pasos Gigantes. As a singer, Mieles has a strength and clarity that effects a sense of urgency to his songs. The intensity begins with the opening track "Tu Ausencia" and continues, without relent, throughout this sparkling salsa project. The project ends with "Nestor y Frankie" a tribute to Nestor Sánchez and Frankie Ruiz, two commendable heros of Mr. Mieles. There's zero filler material here, folks — just 100% pure salsa fireworks. With a muscle-filled band featuring Pablo "Chino" Nuñez and Harry Adorno on timbales, conguero Pequeño Johnny Rivero, bassist Hector "Maximo" Rodriguez, pianists Edwin Sanchez, Kevin Rodriguez and Frankie Guadalupe, and others. A big DJ Alert. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

MAMBORAMA
Directamente Al Mambo
Ahi-Nama Records
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Finally here: Mamborama's long awaited third release. Their previously CD, Entre La Habana Y El Yuma (2003), was a huge hit, mixing up Cuban timba, salsa and jazzy dance numbers. Directamente Al Mambo continues in this vein, and raises the bar for its intensity, swing and soul. These guys are pumped. Leader and pianist Bill Wolfer composed the music and much of the lyrics, but he also collaborated heavily with Sixto Llorente on a good number of tracks here. Wolfer's most definitely an individual who likes to play with the tools he has, pushing — changing, but not entirely breaking the form: smoldering timba. Note his synthesized fuzz tone guitar riff on "La Mentirosa." It works. His dizzying keyboard work on "Señorita Pajarita" tangles with El Tosco's flutework in just the right way, pulling you in smiling the whole time. Surprise touches abound on Directamente. The band itself is known to change shape with each release, and on this one Wolfer hired some heavy hitters. On it you'll find Los Van Van's Roberto Hernandez "Robertón," Tony Calá, José Luis Cortés "El Tosco"(NG La banda), Cubanito 20.02 checks in, Carlos Manuel "Kalunga," Alexi Sanchez "El Nene," José Goméz "Pepito," Feliciano Arango, Alexander Abreu, David Bencomo, Amaury Pérez and others. The result is a fresh, invigorating and inviting Cuban music experience that will shake up your preconceptions of Cuban salsa. Way to go. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

ROBERTO ROENA Y SU APOLLO SOUND
Sr. Bongó
Roan
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: Oomph! This one's brimming with swing, brother. Here's a fresh salsa project that will breathe life into any party. What more would you expect from a project led by maestro Roena that includes pianists Willie Sotelo and Papo Lucca? Hows' about heavy hitter timbalero Tito D'Gracia? Or a solid wall of coro made up of Luisito Carrion, Darvel Garcia, and Domingo Quiñonez? Singers Hector Tempo Alomar and Javier Marrero never sounded better: Listen to the drive on the Eric Figueroa composition "Tin Tin Ton Ton" — *the* jewel in the crown, in this listener's opinion, or the fiery track "Abre Tu Corazón." The material here feels totally vital and essential. Includes two versions of the killer tribute "Por Siempre Anibal" (Anibal Vázquez) — one of them being a brilliant Puente-esque big band version with guests Cachete Maldonado, Tommy Villariny, Angie Machado and many others. Legendary Roena himself is in top form here, and his performance on Sr. Bongó would draw the respect and awe of bongoceros of any age. This is the real deal, folks. Salsa the way it ought to be. KING BONGO

EditorsPick: Now on DVD! Here was the review for the CD (sold separately) which contains the same tracks... If your a fan of the pumped up, high energy, salsa of Colombia, scroll down and click "Add to Shopping Cart" now. This one's the bomb, Salsa on Steroids; the stuff you hear at the Salsa Congress and ask "What was that!?" This new Diego Gale project is destined to become a pop salsa classic, but there are some caveats. In front of Gale's primo rhythm section, King Bongo's singers are John William Upegui, Jairo Andrade, Jonathan Bentancur, and Oti Osorio. But does that matter? Several of the tracks here are extended versions of Sonora Carruseles tracks ("Micaela," "La Comay" etc.). Whatever the name is on the cover, Gale Productions are Gale productions. It's a widely held view that, while there's not much difference or individuality to the bands produced by the Gale factory (just change a few singers), the product is a perfect means to an end. This is a well greased, finely tuned machine that has taken over. Listen to the timbales in overdrive on "Hasta Que Se Rompa El Cuero" — it's got breakneck speed almost beyond what's humanly possible. This is the track that will bring the house down. On Academia De Baile, Gale went wild. Here, he looked deep into his bag of tricks and selected only those hooks he knew would work. And those hooks are sharp. Every track here is white-hot sizzling, and guaranteed to have the dancers scrambling to find a place on the dancefloor. From the opening track, "Academia De Baile" to "Levántate Bailador" to the incredible "La Comay," Acedemia De Baile will barely allow you to breathe. Protect yourself... RUN! CUBANOSON
Recordando A Cuba... Papo Ortega Presents: Cubanoson
Cubanoson Productions
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Nice! An unexpected, all embracing, son-salsa release in the style of the best classic SAR recordings. In fact, most of the arrangements here are done by Manolo Albo, one of the originators (Along with Roberto Torres and Sergio Bofil) of the SAR dynasty. The brainchild of pianist-singer Leonel "Papo" Ortega, Cubanoson sports deep rich tres driven grooves (Junior Rivera) fronted by seasoned singers who know what they're doing: Ernest "Chico" Alvarez, another SAR star, and the legendary Ronnie Baro (Africando, SonSublime, Broadway, Barretto etc.) who here revives the classic "Monsieur Jose" — remember that from the recently reissued classic Sonido Solido? "Papo" Ortega can spin a fine, inviting, montuno, and sports a just-right vocal timber to fit right in with his other first-line singers. Cubanoson has all the elements of the best old school dance material, and is earmarked to become a classic. With percussionist Luisito Quintero. bassist Willie Cintron, trumpeter and musical director Roberto Rodríguez and others who help to make this one a very special acquisition. Very Highly Recommended. JUANITO Y LA AGRESIVA
Llegó Juanito Y La Agresiva
Envidia (original import)
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA COLOMBIA; COLOMBIA
EditorsPick: Why is Colombia's Llegó Juanito y La Agresiva one of my personal favorite recent CDs? It could be the arrangements, all pure unadulterated salsa numbers without pretense. It could be the musicians — all experienced pros delivering crisp, articulated sound. The singers? Kike Harvey (listed in the liners as Kike Arbey), Hermes Manyoma, Jorge "Kini" Murillo and Fabio Castano. Not much room for criticism there, delivering mostly that husky, seasoned sonerismo style that I love. The coro? They've got that great típico nasal Colombian-Venezuelan thing going that works so well. Any one of the above would be enough to merit repeated play, but the fact that Llegó Juanito embodies all of the above qualities is a recipe for salsa magic. Listen to their beautiful interpretation of "Sin Apariencias." In fact, zero filler material here. A full-hearted DJ Alert stamped all of it. It has found repeated play on my machine. OCHÚN
En El Año De Ochún
Ochun Music
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Wow, what pure salsa pleasure we've got here! The opening track, "La Esquína De Galiano (A Bailar Con Rita)" will embrace you with its almost jarring musical integrity. I was delighted to discover that they've included an extended version of this title as the last track. But "La Equína..." is not the only great track on El Año De Ochún. Far from it. This is Ochún's second release, and this New York orchestra is really coming into its own: clearly dedicated students of the great Afro-Cuban traditions. These are well-worked, rich, multi-layered compositions that speak volumes about the earnestness and depth of the musicians as well as the ingenuity of arranger Pablo Moya. This is a first class project that should not be missed. It's not the fastest, hottest, hippest or whatever. Ochún does not seem to be interested in any of those labels. This band is so soulful that even the one bolero, "Un Beso Y Un Adios," rang true and nearly conjured a tear from this jaded listener. And what a lush, moving version of the charanga classic "Camagüey." It's just gorgeous. Great job by vocalist Miguel Garcia. Also kudos to pianist-vocalist Paul Armstrong, conguero/timbalero Gabriel (Chinchilita) Machado, sax and flute player Ocavio Ponce, bassists Gregg August and Guillermo Edgehill and many others. Guests include Oriente Lopez and Mauricio Smith Jr., Meilana McLean Gillard and others. Note to up-and-coming bands out there: Study this CD hard. It's a gem. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: The first track, "Regresa A Mi" will let you know right away: Damn, this Puertoriqueña can sing. That it's a collaboration with salsa phenomenon N'Klabe is also telling. The track rocks, but it's due only in part to the boys. It wouldn't rock nearly so hard if Kiuldret weren't the talent she is. Still uncertain? Listen to the fiery club number "Cariño Mio" (featuring Aldo & Danddy) or the hard-driving "Mala Calaña" (with an interlude by Némesys). Play it loud — this, folks, is DJ Alert material. With a coro section that features Johnny Rivera, Nino Segarra, Alberto Barros (also on trombone), bassist Ricardo Lugo (from Los Protagonistas de La Salsa, Edwin Clemente etc.) and others. Thanks to the work of producer Eduardo Reyes, Kiuldret is in the house. And she's not just a pretty face. Pop salsa doesn't get much better. Highly Recommended. (BP)

EditorsPick: Mr. Gorbea is back with his best release in years. His smoldering slower mid-tempo montuno grooves prove that speed is not what makes salsa hot. A terrific job, and a first class percussion section featuring Frank Reyes on congas, Ruben Borges on timbales and bongocero Juan Rodrigues. With tracks like the deep groove "Pa' Puerto Rico" — listen how Tomer Levy makes his trumpet cry out — Prakatun has clearly solidified Gorbea's reputation as one of New York's best salsa dance bands. He's even crafted a tune, the 6-1/2 minute "DJs Sabroso" that, with its perfect tempo, will guarantee the participation of the dancers. Every track here is a winner, zero filler material. LOS HERMANOS MORENO
Cómo Se Menea
Musical Productions (original import)
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: With their first new release in over seven years, the dynamic Los Hermanos Moreno orchestra is back with a vengeance, and let me tell ya, folks, each track is jam packed with dance floor plutonium. Lead singer Nelson Moreno kicks it off with a sparkling rendition of Oscar D'Leon's "Como Se Menea." The other singers, Peter Pagan (now a Moreno veteran) and Danny are no slouches, and elevate tracks like "Busco" and "Rompamos El Hielo" to that dance club sweet-spot. Noticeably missing from Los Hermanos Moreno is hermano Willie. Bongocero Willie Moreno kick started his solo career with the critically acclaimed (at least by me) Moreno Soy in 2003. And although he's missed here, Fabián Picón steps in and pulls off a 10 for his percussion work here. Every now and then a CD project is released that, by some fluke, has zero filler material. No lame ballads. No sub-standard reggaetón offering. No alternate versions of the same song. Well, Cómo Se Mena is that kind of rarity. A big tip of the hat to trombonist/pianist Alberto Barros who wrote a good number of these tracks and handled the fiery arrangements too. Listen to "Si Ella Estuviera" or the seemingly live version of "Quimbombó." Big DJ Alert. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

BENEDICT & THE MAGIC BAND
Swing Sabor 3
Col Musica
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA COLOMBIA; COLOMBIA
EditorsPick: Wow, you want swing? We got yer swing right here! This full-metal-jacket salsa number from Medellín Colombia, the second release from bandleader/vocalist Benedict Patiño, is swanky and full of funky twists - like the fuzz toned electric guitar that winds through the second half of "Swing Sabor," an ingenious Patiño composition. The best parts of this project have the feel of a 3 a.m. smoke-filled nightclub where the musicians, lubricated with drink, are completely uninhibited, totally loose, and feel like jamming. On Swing Sabor 3, the Magic Band's repertoire consists of original tunes as well as material by the likes of Johnny Blas ("Los Huesos"), Ismael Quintana ("La Llave"), Frankie Dante ("Medley Paz"), Javier Vazquez ("Siguelo"), Manolito ("Y Todavía No"), and Juan Luis Guerra ("Bachata Rosa"). Quite a palette. There are even a few tasty cumbias that oddly seem to fit right in, like Cesar Monge's "La Vela" which turns, halfway through, into a sparkling uptempo salsa-mambo riff. It's hot. Patiño's arrangements are quite unique and the early work of Willie Colón comes to mind — listen to the trombone structure on the jazzy "El Dueño De La Timba", with unexpected turns and power surges. This one is for you salsa connoisseurs out there — I can't seem to get this one off my CD player. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Salsatón - Salsa Con Reggaeton (w/ Daddy Yankee, Voltio, Cheka, N'Klabe Etc.)
Univision
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: I approached this one with more than a bit of trepidation, not really knowing what to expect. So, you can guess how happy I was to hear that Salsatón was actually, at its core, a powerhouse salsa number with some added reggaetón muscle, and not a diluted effort to appeal to the idea of a hip hop demographic. Not that I do not like reggaetón — I do, but so much of recent salsa releases include one track with a reggaetón break that it has become a nearly predictable element. And these breaks often seem included as an afterthought that didn't *really* need to be there. Back to this CD. First off, half of Salsatón is pure explosive salsa [no reggaetón at all] brought to you by one of the genre's treasures. Montañez ranks right up there with Oscar D'Leon and Gilberto Santa Rosa as one of the music's most talented singers — and also one of the most recognizable. Produced by Sergio George — who knows how to build a fire — Salsatón's straight-up salsa numbers like "Yo No Quiero Que Seas Celosa" are some of the hottest you'll hear this year. And the reggaetón infused tracks like "Café Colao" (featuring Crooked Stilo) have the feel that they were built from the ground up, not simply a cut and paste. It's all fresh and waiting to be played at a fine dance club near you. DJ Alert. Highly Recommended. (BP)

YURI BUENAVENTURA
Salsa Dura
Universal/Mercury France (original import)
Originally released: 2006
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA COLOMBIA; COLOMBIA
EditorsPick: It's called Salsa Dura and on select tracks here, he's not kidding. The critically acclaimed singer, composer and bandleader stays the course here with capital "S" salsa alternating with the soulful ballad (like the quite beautiful "3046") But it's the hard tracks like "Salsa Dura" and "Rueda De Casino" that sparkle. With all but a few tracks penned by YB, the enduring sensibility on Salsa Dura is akin to the best material by the veterans of salsa: Ismael Miranda, Adalberto Santiago, or Oscar D'Leon. Listen to "Amanecio" and its no-nonsense attack. You get the feeling that Buenaventura is at the top of his game here. With the help of Diego Galé on percussion. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

PHIL ROBINSON
Oye - Salsa Sabor Y Clave
Oye Records
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Wow, here's a surprise instant hit! L.A. based singer Phil Robinson, who's part Dominican and part Puerto Rican (in case you were wondering) has produced a straight ahead, hard-driving dance salsa number that should be an instant DJ Pick. Robinson, who looks too young to have 30 years performing under his belt, was born in the bronx, then moved to the Dominican republic. He was the lead singer of Orquesta Yaré out of New Jersey in the '70s. Back in L.A. as lead vocalist Robinson's band opened for some big names like Celia Cruz, Oscar D'Leon, Tito Nieves, Tito Puente, and Johnny Pacheco. Not too shabby. With tracks like "Barranquilla" and the vibes fueled "Fantasia," Robinson jams more fire and finesse into Oye - Salsa Sabor y Clave than we've heard in a debut CD quite some time. Full swing arrangements and a voice that cuts right through his bands infectious zeal, Robinson adds nice touches hear and there — like the flute accents used in "El Rebolu'" a track that is sure to keep the dancers happy. Zero filler here. This one, folks, is a must-have for those who can appreciate the finer aspects of salsa. Very Highly recommended. (BP)

EINLLO
Eternamente
Blue Chip Productions
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Great forces often bubble below the surface until the power is too great to contain. Such is the case with New York based Angel Romero, aka "Einllo." Part Dominican part Puerto Rican, Einllo was a former member of Elemento 10, then a backup singer with Miles Peña for four years, and then with India for three more years. With Eternamente, Einllo's debut CD, it is clear that this is a singer who has been schooled well. Eternamente, a project by veteran producer Isidro Infante, who also plays piano on this CD, is a crate full of dynamite — a spitfire production that has the soul of salsa and the temperament of timba. It is no surprise that this production is on par with one of our top salsa picks of 2005... Juicy & Eric's Huracan. Infante was involved in both productions. In fact José Jusino "Juicy" plays percussion on a few tracks here as well. Other players who took part in both projects are José Tabares, Luisito Quintero, Piro Rodriguez, Pablo Santaella and Ramon Rodriguez. Eternamente also features Angie Machado, and a killer coro section comprised of, amongst others, Wichie Camacho, Tito Allen, Johnny Rivera and Gianco Gomez. A Big DJ Alert, a danceclub ready first-draft pick. Check out "Mi Error" and "Tu Me Pides Que Te Olvide." Highly Recommended. (BP)

ORQUESTA GALI
Salsa Sin Fronteras
Gali Music / GM (original import)
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: A true international project, Salsa Sin Fronteras was recorded in part Medellin Colombia, Paris France, Barcelona Spain and mastered in Switzerland. It's the premier solo project of Jorge Gali — a Cuban pianist residing in Geneva. Wear proper protection when handling this disk, please. It is hot, hot, hot. Gali chose Colombia's Diego Galé and his rhythm section to be featured on Salsa Sin Fronteras. Try hard not to get confused: Gali and Galé: two distinct factions working with one goal in mind... killer dance music that rocks the house. And man did they ever succeed. If I had heard this disk a just a few weeks ago it would have made it to my Best of 2005 list. As it is, I'll have to fudge the date for 2006 consideration. Most of these original tracks were penned and arranged by Gali, and they reflect a true-to-form hard salsa dura spirit, with each track leaving a thick cloud of smoke behind. With sizzling vocals provided by Néstor Rivero and Cuba's Donaldo Flores, Juan Diaz "El Indio" and Edisney Portales. Made for the clubs, and an instant DJ Top Pick. GALERA 7 SUR
Desde El Combinado Del Este
Envidia (original import)
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Wow, here's a total surprise: a powerhouse salsa-charanga project by Galera 7 Sur, a group made up of musicians who spent time together in prison from 1975-1990. Their rough and tumble charanga was formed in the penitentiary Combinado Del Este, thus the CD title. Deep dance grooves with an overcharged motor are typical of Galera 7. Listen to the furious, fist-swinging "No Se Lo Digas a Papá" (Calixto Licea) or the full-momentum force of "Tu Loco Y Yo Tranquilo" (Tite Curet). There is no filler here, folks: all thick 100% rhythmic bliss kept active with the help of fine timbalero Pedro "Cara Crimen." Rehearsal for this project was apparently difficult, as some members of the band are continuously in and out of their respective jail cells. The result, however, is a super Cuban salsa with strong roots in the Fania repertoire (they do a tremendous "Azuquita Mami") and Puerto Rico, with some Tite Curet compositions. A gem: Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Dos Soneros, Una Historia: Gilberto Santa Rosa & Victor Manuelle - DVD
Sony/Norte
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Two of salsa's greatest mega-stars joined forces for a live concert at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan Puerto Rico in 2001. Simply stated, this is a killer show, with the two sparring their sonero chops on some numbers and blasting through their hits individually as well. They have a lot of fun with it, and on one extended, humorous number, they compare contrasting ways to woo a woman with song. The crowd, a packed house waving PR flags, went wild. Dos Soneros, Una Historia is high quality big bucks multi-camera production that sports a good picture with superb sound. JOHNNY ORTIZ
Sabor De Rumba
Brayan Records
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: The compositions of Johnny Ortiz are nearing legendary status. Some his classics are numbers like "Catalina La O" — made popular by Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, "Ojos" by Rubén Blades & Willie Colón, "No se compara" interpreted by Frankie Ruiz with Tommy Olivencia's orchestra and “Ritmo del Corazón" — from the 1988 Grammy winning album of the same title by Ray Barretto and Celia Cruz. Ortiz fronted his own band called "Taibori" which, in 1979, sported a young vocalist named Tito Nieves. Comprised of eight superb arrangements by Eric Figueroa, José Febles, Marty Sheller and Nelson "Gazu" Jaime, Sabor De Rumba exudes a pared down purity that reveals the essential flavor and drive that manifests in only the best salsa. I even found myself liking the english track "Latin New Yorker" (arranged by Marty Sheller) — and I'm not usually a big fan of salsa in english. This time it actually works. And with the robust, on-the-money, vocals provided by Alexa and Gilberto Vélez, this one, folks, is a classic in waiting. DJ Alert. A must-have. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

EditorsPick: Terrific salsa celebration of La Solucion's three decades of performing no-nonsense Puerto Rican salsa for the dancers. The sparkling opening track, "30 Aniversario," is indicative of the rest of this uptempo, fiery project: it's highly combustible material. With special guest arranger and pianist Willie Soleto. And if you're familiar with other recent projects that Mr. Sotelo has been affiliated with (especially his "Hijos De La Salsa Gorda"), you'll know that dropping his name is a not so subtle way to tell you "get this one, N-O-W." JUAN DE MARCOS AND THE AFRO-CUBAN ALLSTARS
Step Forward - The Next Generation
Globestar / DM Ahora
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: When they say next generation, they're not kidding. Tresero vocalist Juan De Marcos and his crew of ambassadors of Cuban dance music have evolved into something quite grand since their 1997 debut "A Toda Cuba Le Gusta." De Marcos is not known to do things in a small way, and on Step Forward he's got a small ocean of musicians including the vocalists Dennie Martinez, Tirso Duarte, Jose Luis Arango, Leo Vera, Pedro "El Nene" Lugo, Bernard Lavilliers in addition to himself. Step Forward can be considered a primer for modern Cuban music — embracing the traditional, yet with the cojones to utilize unorthodox elements like Jose Luis "Chicoy" Valdes' electric guitar riffs on the Lucumi based "Addimu A Chango." And while there is a range of tempos and styles here — there's the heartfelt bolero "Preludio Y Fuga" sung with soul by Leo Vera, there's also killer timba-fused material here like "13.3.2.21.1.1.8.5" (yes, that's the title) and "Adivinador" that enters the realm of, say, Pupy Pedroso and Maraca Valle. There's jazzy material too, and there's an over nine minute instrumental tribute to the late Rubén González. It's all good: a foot-locker full of expansive, high class Cuban finesse. Just what the doctor ordered. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

MAYITO RIVERA
Llego La Hora
Universal/Pimienta
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: With the strength and determination of a man with a singular mission, Van Van vocalist Mario Rivera "Mayito" will get you up and dancing if it is the last thing he does. This blazing salsa-timba number shows how this young renegade has developed his chops and sensibility since he started performing with Van Van in 1999. During this period, he's honed his skills with Haila Mompie, Orlando "Maraca" Valle, and Síntesis. Not bad company. And while his irrepressible enthusiasm and warm stage demeanor has made him one of Cuba's most popular singers, Llego La Hora raises the level of appreciation he clearly deserves. Here's a guy who can not only sing his ass off, but he wrote all of the tracks and music as well. Llego La Hora, Mayito's first solo release in five years, is a pure, spirited, salsa-timba record, and one of the best modern dance records of the year. Special mention of the superb coro featuring Ademilis Hernandez, Alfredo Rodriguez, Jorge Leliebre, and Jannier Rodriguez. Also featured are Los Van Van members Samuel Formell (drums) and Boris Luna (keyboards). Put this one on and turn it way up. This one, folks, is a must-have. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Wow! With the power of an unexpected slap in the face, ¡Dime Nagüe! just may be the hottest Cuban salsa-son release of the year. Seared with the stamp of Changüi, this hard-driving project is catapulted by the dynamic and superbly executed vocals of Pascual Matos Aguirre 'Sinsote' (Orquesta Revé) and a cast that includes timbaleros Samuel Formell (son of Van Van's Juan Formell) and Oderquis Revé, as well as treseros 'Papi' Oviedo, Miklos Bogdan 'Yanesito' and Jorge Luis Villa, this hard-to-find import CD is simply not to be missed. Non-stop panic inducing arrangements by bassist Arnaldo Jimenez... the rising star of modern Cuban dance music. Producer Janne Miklos Bogdan has clearly assembled some of Cubas brightest musicians — they have been pulled from Los Van Van, Sierra Maestra, Elio Revé Jr., Isaac Delgado, and Cubanismo. Do not hesitate, this one, folks, is a total Must-Have. It's just what is needed to make your summer sizzle; a reminder that the wells of Cuban music are always deeper than previously thought. If you have any doubts go ahead and listen to "Explotó La Rumba" penned by Andres Soza Revé. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

ORLANDO VALLE "MARACA" Y OTRA VISION
Soy Yo
Ahi-Nama Records
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: There's one thing that gets me as excited as a new Cesar "Pupy" Pedroso CD, and that's a new Orlando "Maraca" Valle CD. Flautist-composer Maraca (ex Irakere member) ranks right up there with Pupi for producing some of the most interesting contemporary Cuban dance-party music today. Compositionally his work smacks of divine timba intervention; thematically, via the selection of tracks -- as well as their play order, he's a real smart cookie. He knows what works, and he assembles the best available people to make it happen ...his releases never seem to disappoint. Soy Yo can be seen as an extension of Maraca's highly regarded Tremenda Rumba! release (2002), to which it owes much in sensibility and that intense "Castigala" feel. It's a good thing that there's a good slow number, "Estrella De Amor," popped right in the middle. Without it, the risk of a timba-induced aneurysm would run pretty high. Better Cuban party music would be difficult to find. Superlative vocals by Wilfredo Campa and Rolando Morejón. With special guests Tatá Güines and Eladio "Pancho" Terry. DJ Alert. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

JUICY & ERIC (JOSÉ JUICY JUSINO & ERIC VÉLEZ)
Huracan
Diamond Records
Originally released: 2005
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Wow — what a terrific surprise. What we have here is a smart, fresh, explosive New York salsa dura release with sparkling arrangements on par in density and swing with the best dance music happening anywhere right now: Huracan is just that — a musical hurricane that fulfills the promise and potential of a modern salsa that has been brewing for some time. Conguero-vocalist Jose Juicy Jusino and percussionist Eric Velez have accomplished something very special here: they've pushed the form hard enough to damn-near change its shape — or, at least, the listeners perspective. The result is totally fresh salsa. Listen to the Isidro Infante arrangement of "Maestro De Rumberos." Try not to be impressed. And the opening track "Llegaste Tu" is a danceclub killer. Then there's the title track, "Huracan." Where has Infante been keeping these gems? A BIG dj alert. There is zero filler here, folks. Zilch... none. With Rubén Rodriguez on bass, David Piro Rodriguez on trumpet, pianists Isidro Infante and Edwin Sanchez and many others. Very Highly recommended. (BP)
