And, man, what a show. Barros, one of the most sought after arranger-bandleader-trombonists in salsa, has brought together a top notch group of musicians to interpret the most memorable hits of Guayacán, Joe Arroyo, Grupo Niche, Los Titanes, Fruko y Sus Tesos, Los Carruseles, Grupo Gale and La Misma Gente. And he's got most of the original singers of these hits as to boot. To get a sense of scale, here's a partial list of participating singers: Charlie Cardona, Moncho Santana, John Lozano, Wilson Saoco, Cali Aleman, Gabino Pampini, Raquel Zozaya, Saulo Sanchez, Tommy Ruiz, Andy Caidedo and Diego Moran who, for my money, deserves superstardom. This large man has a voice that's larger than life. Listen to him rock the house on "Rebelión" and "Pa'l Bailador" a few of the many highlights here. Other red-hot tracks to watch out for are "La Palomita," "Oiga, Mire, Vea," "Basto Un Mirada," and "Ganas." It's a relentlessly sizzling party, folks, complete with gorgeous young non-stop dancers who exude pure heart-stopping salsa sexiness. Like all Alberto Barros projects I have seen and heard, this one is of extremely high quality. The sound engineering, editing and photography are all top drawer. EditorsPick: Splash some water in my face, will you? I could be dreaming here. Whoa... Knock Out is, by far, the best live modern Cuban dance concert DVD we have come across to date. It took seven camera men (yes, seven) to capture the intensity and heat of this milestone show. Recorded live in September of 2005 at the Teatro Karl Marx, Knock Out brings two of Cuba's heaviest dance bands, Manolito y Su Trabuco and Bamboleo, together in an event that gave the audience something to tell their grandkids about. Billed as a heavyweight battle between two boxers, the DVD opens, hysterically, with Manolito and Lázaro Valdés donning their boxing gear and stepping into the ring - er, stage. What happens next is more powerful than a punch in the stomach by Mike Tyson: untethered heart stopping timba-salsa born by fusing the two mega-band's powerhouse musicians and gorgeous singers into one bone-crunching unit. Individually these two bands are steel-riveted army tanks, but together ...well let's just say there's nothing like it. Valdés and Manolito go head-to-head on their respective keyboards, piling notes and montunos on top of one another: making each other smile with their fiery chops. The audience, dancing and singing with the band, was completely and justifiably intoxicated as they soaked in numbers like "Todo Lo Bonito," "Tu Me Dijiste Mentiras," "Marcando La Distancia," "Ya No Hace Falta" and "Locos Por Mi Habana." This is modern Cuban dance music at is best: complex, driven, and almost overwhelmingly sexy. Mostly of Beny Moré (with fourteen of the 21 tracks his), which is fine, because these are the ones to watch. Taken mostly from movies he's appeared in, this compilation has Beny singing and dancing. His band is hip and knows how to generate heat — watch out for some enticing mambo dancing: the gyrating woman in "El Timberito De Belén" would make even the most sedate heart palpitate. Other terrific tracks to look for are "El Baile De Sillón" and "Morón," both Moré gems. Not that every track is great. The Daniel Santos material is mostly him seated crooning boleros. Not much excitement, but a good document nonetheless. And there are a few tracks where the picture quality is just awful, but they are the exceptions. Just to have complete performances on DVD of Beny makes this one worth it. I've seen other Moré videos and DVDs, but they usually depict only a song's intro — a little appetizer. Pretty impressive. It is obvious that much attention and planning was made with respect to the photography, which could not get much better than on En Vivo Desde Bellas Artes. This multi-camera shoot is directed with intelligence and a clear knowledge of where the cameras should be in a salsa performance. Hats off to the director of photography -- very well done. This is Puerto Rican salsa at it's hard-driving best, and clearly defines Mr. Valentin as a much respected bandleader and arranger. With Evolution, an apt title indeed, he has produced one of the most intriguing and well-balanced salsa records I have heard in a long time: a class act that's smart, stylish, and packed with four decades of salsa know-how. The former Fania All Star brought in some special friends like Ray De La Paz, Luis Marin and Paoli Mejias to help give life to some savory new compositions and a crop of exemplary cover renditions like Silvestre Mendez' "Clotide," Enrique Bonnet's "Que Me Digan Feo" and Roberto Anglero's "Hace Tiempo Que Te Estoy Mirando." Valentin's singers, Julio Lopez and Kriptony Texeira, are both high caliber performers. Check out Lopez' vocal prowess on "El Doña Bella," the Raul Marerro composition. And Texeira does complete justice to Bobby Capo's "El Cucú." But there's no denying the excitement generated by any project that includes Ray De La Paz. This guy throws fireballs left and right, and the two Gino Melendez tracks he sings are clearly highlights on Evolution. The top notch band also features pianists Lenny Prieto and José Lugo, trumpeters Angie Machado and Julio Alvarado, bone player Eliut Cintron, and a coro section that boasts Luisito Carrión, Pichi Pérez, Chewi Ramos, Janira Torres, and Nino Segarra. There are invited guests, too: the singer Giselle and guitarist (and New York Yankee) Bernie Williams. The CD is so good I almost forgot to mention the DVD. The band is an all-female string ensemble (and a percussionist) led by Zenaida Romeu — whose great-uncle was the respected orchestra leader Antonio Maria Romeu. Interestingly, the members of the group perform their repertoire — a unique blend of classical, Cuban roots and original compositions — by heart. No written material is used during their live performances. By knowing the material so well, they are able to communicate on a deeper level musically and emotionally. This film, directed by Ceclia Domeyko, is an enlightening and highly enjoyable look at the dynamics and development of the ensemble. A tangential benefit is the fascinating look at life and culture in Cuba, and the manner in which an ensemble like this functions in Cuban society. And the music is fantastic. EditorsPick: Candido Fabré is definitely one of Cuba’s best vocalists, and a great composer, giving us seminal tunes like “Comenzó la Fiesta,” “A Palo No,” and “¿Quién Ha Visto Por Ahí Mi Sombrero De Yarey?” – and in the '80s and '90s, with Pachi Naranjo’s influential Orquesta Original de Manzanillo, Fabré found the best vehicle for his sonorous voice, impeccable improvisations, and adventurous spirit. La Original was truly original, bringing in new sounds and rhythms, giving Revé and Van Van a run for their peso, and impacting Latin groups beyond the sugar cane curtain. Fast forward to the later 90s and Candido is now fronting his own band, still working within the charanga moderna format, but with a more folky, acoustic sound, including a prominent role for the tres. However, his voice is not what it used to be, now sounding rather rough, seemingly seasoned with gravel and tobacco. In 2005, Fabré and his 14 piece band was invited to headline two performances in Edinburgh, Scotland, as part of The Fairtrade Gathering World Music Concert and the Make Poverty History concert the next day. The DVD features footage from these two events as well as interviews in Cuba with Fabre and his mother. Some old classics from the Manzanillo days are covered, as well as some from Fabré’s Tumi output. Unfortunately, the production values on this DVD are sub-par, with jerky camerawork, some poor lighting, and patchy sound; nonetheless the concert footage is fun, and the interview is interesting, providing a tantalizing but all too brief glimpse of this great sonero/composer and his fabulous band. This one takes the manouche style of gypsy music, best known via Django Reinhardt, and blends it into the maelstrom of Cuban modern jazz. Practically, it works out that Mathias Levy, the violinist from the French group solos over the Cuban rhythm section. The French musicians contributed a bunch of the material, and the Cuban group interprets it; Vannia Borges and Tania Pantoja, former (Borges) and current (Pantoja) singers of Bamboleo, each sing one song. The group recorded a cd, and along with that cd is a DVD documentary and concert of a show that the ensemble played last year in Geneva, Switzerland. Musicianship at the highest level. EditorsPick: This is a really fun video that shows you what the Cecilia Nöel experience is all about – sexy, soulful, sabroso music, fronted by a beautiful lady with zesty vocals, plus alluring female back up singers and dancers, entertaining visuals, and a crack big band that really cooks, whether it’s funk, disco, rock, salsa, cumbia, boogaloo, samba, balada, or a mix of any and all. Listening to her studio CDs only gives you some of an idea of her spirit and commanding presence; the sound quality on the DVD is great, and tracks like “Everybody’s Mambo” and “La Habana Nunca Será la Misma Sin Tí” are infectious and ring true. At first, her frequent use of English on the studio recordings got a little under my skin, but once I saw the video I understood. She’s kind of like a more modern version of La Lupe, a Peruvian Joe Bataan if you will, with plenty of fire and tenderness, and she’s expressing the multicultural world of the Global Village as we live it today. As if that weren’t enough, she calls her band The Wild Clams, and her husband (and sometime collaborator) is Colin Hay, the man behind all the classic tunes of Men At Work, and a fine vocalist and songwriter in his own right. EditorsPick: Unfortunately this CD and DVD by former Irakere alum César López and his Habana Ensemble is not an improvement on their 2005 album Andante. In fact, it may be worse – the string section just bogs things down and coats the proceedings in a sticky thick syrup of Cuban molasses. I really do not like the Kenny G. style of R&B jazz lite, and unfortunately, López’ tone seems stuck in a time warp elevator. As a Latino I feel it’s my right to complain that too many times our maudlin, sentimental side takes things over and drenches our fiery souls in schmaltz. There are a couple of tunes here that are more lively, but for the most part the ‘clásicos’ are boleros or filín ballads, perhaps much beloved by some Latinos, but not to my taste. What follows is one of the best quality Latin jazz performance DVDs we have come across. Crisp picture and excellent sound are found on this nicely produced four camera shoot. Fine performances by Charlie Sepulveda and the Turnaround band, flanked by Chocolate, "Perico" Ortiz and Feyjoo. The is superb old-school salsa, and Mr. Castro used the opportunity to highlight his latest find, a lanky new lead vocalist named Héctor Luis whose clear, cutting, timbre begs comparison to the late Héctor Lavoe. This kid is good, and he glides through the conjunto’s best hits with ease, radiating a focused intensity that suggests that he was born to do this. Héctor debuted on last year's Si Ella Estuviera. The band has no trouble keeping the audience happy, giving them savory renditions of “Señora Ley”, Los Rodríguez”, “ Ay, Que Bueno”, “Sin Rumbo Alguno” and “Vamomos De Rumba”. Terrific tres-work by Clásico veteran José García. The five (5) total hours of video, both performance and interviews, comprise much more than just a Master Class of playing the batá. This is more like an intense University level course which will take many viewings to even begin to digest. This is truly a historical work which will take its place among the few masterpieces within the study of Afro Cuban drumming and religion. Daniel Alfonso takes us from the basics of playing all three drums to a complete Oro Seco. Watching the Master's hands as he demonstrates each drum in Disc Two is a very profound experience, knowing that these hands have been playing batá for so many years. After each drum is taught, demonstrating all the sounds and hand placements, Señor Alfonso plays toques for the Orishas, one drum following the other. Truly masterful. The DVDs' production is to be praised. It gives us very clear views of each drum, of each drum head and hand technique. The sound quality of the DVD is also to be praised. The ambience of the room at the Cabildo de Santa Teresa in Matanzas is excellent. Interviews within the DVD project give light to the stories of the Orishas, to the deep history of the drums in Cuba, and to Cuban religious life with the drums. Señor Alfonso's knowledge of the history of the religious drums leads us from the beginnings of the fundamento batá in Matanzas up until the present day. You will get a true feeling for the pride, the beauty, the profundity of drumming within the religious and secular life in Matanzas. Good quality sound and picture. Oddly, the vocal parts by Camacho-Garcia track "Caridad" is studio footage edited into the live show. One wonders what happened to the original show footage. Aside from that track, you get what you might expect: pure fire. Below is our review of the 2-CD set, the same show, so it's mostly all applicable... This is very big, and what a start to the new year! Descarga Boricua, the brainchild of eclectic producer Fran' Ferrer, first hit the scene in 1993 with their hugely popular and critically acclaimed ¡Esta, Sí Va! project that was, arguably, the decade's best salsa release. Descarga Boricua was more vision and concept than a specific group of musicians. Orchestra sized power salsa, top arrangements, and a ton of in-your-face swing epitomized the essence of the band. The lineup always included the best musicians from Puerto Rico as well as a ton of special guests. The band released a few other albums over the subsequent five or so years, but the amazing energy, power and finesse of ¡Esta, Sí Va! was never quite equaled. Until now. Something must have been percolating in the ten years since the last Descarga Boricua release, because Fran' Ferrer has outdone himself here. With Salseando, he summoned the Gods of Salsa to help create a blast of swing that packs more fuerza y sabor into two cds than most bands can muster in a lifetime. This live performance, recorded in San Juan in 2007, musically directed by tresero Louis Garcia, brings Fania All Star composer and pianist Larry Harlow and trombonist Jimmy Bosch into the fold.
