I just had a chance to preview this 2-hour DVD and I can attest that it is packed with terrific salsa, New York style. Ernie Acevedo's Conjunto Imagen and Willie Villegas' Entre Amigos are both highly respected salsa bands in this area and they rock this live performance in Brooklyn. Watch out for some sizzling timbale action from Villegas ...he's a monster. There are two amazing guests: Sammy Ayala, a veteran singer from Cortijo and Ismael Rivera, and the legendary cuatro player Yomo Toro (Fania All Stars). Also worth mentioning is that singer Frankie Otero from Wayne Gorbea's band is an invited guest on Villegas' set. This pivotal show was previously released as a 2-CD set — something I reviewed quite favorably when it was released in 2003. Well, the DVD is equally collectable, and no wonder: it's virtually the same track listing as the CD set. But here, of course, you get to see the band performing — which is pretty special especially for those of us who haven't yet had the pleasure of attending a live Selecta show. The main singers for the event, Frankie Vázquez and Virgilio Hurtado do an exemplary job. But surprises were in store. There is a *seriously* extended version of "Salsa y Control" that has to be seen to believed. It's a piece of spontaneous salsa history that features not only singers Vázquez and Hurtado, but also the great Tito Nieves, Cheo Andujar, Kim De Los Santos and, pulled right out of the audience, Yuri Buenaventura. This track goes on forever, and that's not long enough: it truly embodies the very spirit of the genre.
