A discographic profile of the popular Bronx-born Pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger.

ARROYO, Martin

(b Bronx, New York, USA) Pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger. Played sax from age 9 to 18; switched to piano, taking tuition from Cuban Carlos Jiménez and later Joel Diamond, who helped Martin gain entry to the Mannes College of Music; studied there 3 years with Jill McManus and Gordon Mannette, graduating with a Professional Studies Diploma. Enrolled at The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music; studied there with the notable Jacki Byard, Gary Dial and Kenny Warner; graduated with a BA in Fine Arts in Jazz and Contemporary Music May '91. Twice received the Tito Puente Scholarship Fund Award.

Made album debut as a leader of a quintet with innovative Latin jazz set Now Is The Time '93 on NYC-based salsa label Top Ten Hits; album was distinguished by Martin's "progressive, insightful and swinging compositions" wrote Larry Birnbaum in NY Latino. Meanwhile worked as musical director for Dominican sonero Rey Reyes, co-producing, arranging and playing piano on Reyes' albums Vampira! '93 on J&N and Llegó La Hora '96 on AVL/JAR; also co-produced, wrote two charts and sessioned on Miles Peña's outstanding debut album De Que Me Vale '93 on RMM's Sonero label.

Also sessioned with Victor Waill, Johnny Ventura, Richie Cabo, Rudy Victorino (on the singer/composer's notable Sangre Taina '96 on J&N/EMI Latin), Miosotis and Fulanito on their merengue house ripiao hit El Hombre Mas Famoso de la Tierra '97 on Cutting Records. Has performed with numerous Latin music luminaries incl. Johnny Pacheco, Tito Nieves, Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe, José Alberto, Paquito Guzmán, Frankie Ruiz, Anthony Cruz, Bobby "Compañia" Rodríguez, Héctor Casanova, Ray de la Paz, Louie Ramírez, Erick, Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, Grupo Fascinación, Angel Canales.

Founded his own production company MAQRO '94. Followed-up with the uncompromising Latin jazz album Martin Arroyo '97, the inaugural release on the new NYC-based World Beat Records label. Teamed up with sonero Frankie Vázquez for the magnificent Los Soneros del Barrio '99 on Rumbero by the band of the same name, who made their live debut at NYC's prestigious venue S.O.B.'s on 22 Nov. '99.
