Yes, it's that time of the year again folks. It's when we assess all of the material we've heard this past year and make a humble attempt at distilling it down to a manageable handful that represent the best releases of the year. I use the term 'represent' very intentionally here: Use this list as a starting point, as there were lots of great CDs that could have easily been included if not for our arbitrary, self-imposed, limits. My personal list shows the strength and vitality of local independent salsa projects like those of 8 y Más, Lefty Pérez and "Little" Johnny Rivero. Colombia played a big role this year too: Benedict & The Magic Band, Alberto Caicedo, and Real Charanga prove that South America is keeping the flame high and bright. Pushing the envelope is something I look for in new releases, and bands like Ochún, Mamborama, and the Cuban singer Telmary are doing things that go beyond their associated genres. Additionally some familiar names like Roberto Roena and Africando released new projects that were just to good not to include here. This year we've also included the Best Reissues of the year as well as these additional categories: Best Folkloric Release, Best Compilation, and Best DVDs. My picks are listed below, followed by Peter Watrous' and then by John Child's reissue recommendations. Enjoy, and the best for 2007!Polin's Picks of 2006 8 Y MÁS!Juega Billar Q&A Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA EditorsPick: Okay folks, here's the salsa CD we've been waiting for - and just in time to make our Best of 2006 list: A bulls-eye salsa dura featuring New York's best players... vocalist supreme Frankie Vázquez, conguero Bobby Allende, Marc Quiñones on timbales, pianist Ricky Gonzalez, bassist Rubén Rodríguez, trumpeters Raul Agraz and Angel Fernandez. The band plays some astonishing renditions of compositions by Lalo Rodriguez, Ismael Miranda, Rubén Blades, Ray Barretto, C. Curet Alonso and other heavies. Don't miss Ricky González' arrangement of the classic "Toro Mata", a salsa hall-of-fame track originally made gold by Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco. Here, guests Tito Nieves and Domingo Quiñones kick into high gear for a period of pure salsa heaven. Also features a fitting tribute to Ray Barretto, an original track featuring Barretto's son Chis on saxophone. A big DJ Alert, and a salsa Must-Have. Very Highly Recommended. We got yer swing right here! This full-metal-jacket salsa number from Medellín Colombia, the second release from bandleader/vocalist Benedict Patiño, is swanky and full of funky twists - like the fuzz toned electric guitar that winds through the second half of "Swing Sabor," an ingenious Patiño composition. The best parts of this project have the feel of a 3 a.m. smoke-filled nightclub where the musicians, lubricated with drink, are completely uninhibited, totally loose, and feel like jamming. On Swing Sabor 3, the Magic Band's repertoire consists of original tunes as well as material by the likes of Johnny Blas ("Los Huesos"), Ismael Quintana ("La Llave"), Frankie Dante ("Medley Paz"), Javier Vazquez ("Siguelo"), Manolito ("Y Todavía No"), and Juan Luis Guerra ("Bachata Rosa"). Quite a palette. There are even a few tasty cumbias that oddly seem to fit right in, like Cesar Monge's "La Vela" which turns, halfway through, into a sparkling uptempo salsa-mambo riff. It's hot. Patiño's arrangements are quite unique and the early work of Willie Colón comes to mind - listen to the trombone structure on the jazzy "El Dueño De La Timba", with unexpected turns and power surges. This one is for you salsa connoisseurs out there - I can't seem to get this one off my CD player. Very Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order Swing Sabor 3 Now! ALBERTO CAICEDOLa Voz De Colombia - Gerardo Rosales Presents: Alberto Caicedo Wallboomers / original import Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA INTERNATIONAL EditorsPick: Alberto Caicedo's debut salsa release as a leader is a tremendous effort that pays off big right from the opening track, the Gerardo Rosales composition "La Voz De Colombia." It's a fiery dance number in which the singer proclaims "Por que yo soy tu voz... Yo Soy Tu Voz." And he seems to mean it. This is an all-embracing project that commands respect not only for the singer's formidable abilities, but also for its lofty production standards. The level of musicianship here is top-drawer, and Caicedo's not afraid to think outside the box. Whether it's the timba-tinged "Este Amor Me Mata" or the use of Ulrich de Jesús' electric guitar which adds additional power to "Un Poquito de Amor" or the Jamaican spiced "El Suavecito." Most of the compositions are original, penned by either Caicedo or the Venezuelan bandleader and percussionist, maestro Gerardo Rosales. Rosales' own band, the respected Netherlands based Charanga La Crisis, are welcomed guests on two two tracks: Caicedo's interpretations of two killer classic covers Grupo Niche's "Cali Pachanguero" and "La Vida Es Un Carnaval," the sizzling track made popular by La Reina, Celia Cruz. This salsero has his scope set on big things. And from the sound of "La Voz De Colombia," he's off to a fine start. This is a classy salsa project with style, power and extra integrity. Very Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order La Voz De Colombia Now! MAMBORAMADirectamente Al Mambo Ahi-Nama Records Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA EditorsPick: Finally here: Mamborama's long awaited third release. Their previously CD, Entre La Habana Y El Yuma (2003), was a huge hit, mixing up Cuban timba, salsa and jazzy dance numbers. Directamente Al Mambo continues in this vein, and raises the bar for its intensity, swing and soul. These guys are pumped. Leader and pianist Bill Wolfer composed the music and much of the lyrics, but he also collaborated heavily with Sixto Llorente on a good number of tracks here. Wolfer's most definitely an individual who likes to play with the tools he has, pushing - changing, but not entirely breaking the form: smoldering timba. Note his synthesized fuzz tone guitar riff on "La Mentirosa." It works. His dizzying keyboard work on "Señorita Pajarita" tangles with El Tosco's flutework in just the right way, pulling you in smiling the whole time. Surprise touches abound on Directamente. The band itself is known to change shape with each release, and on this one Wolfer hired some heavy hitters. On it you'll find Los Van Van's Roberto Hernandez "Robertón," Tony Calá, José Luis Cortés "El Tosco"(NG La banda), Cubanito 20.02 checks in, Carlos Manuel "Kalunga," Alexi Sanchez "El Nene," José Goméz "Pepito," Feliciano Arango, Alexander Abreu, David Bencomo, Amaury Pérez and others. The result is a fresh, invigorating and inviting Cuban music experience that will shake up your preconceptions of Cuban salsa. Way to go. Very Highly Recommended. The opening track, "La Esquína De Galiano (A Bailar Con Rita)" will embrace you with its almost jarring musical integrity. I was delighted to discover that they've included an extended version of this title as the last track. But "La Equína..." is not the only great track on El Año De Ochún. Far from it. This is Ochún's second release, and this New York orchestra is really coming into its own: clearly dedicated students of the great Afro-Cuban traditions. These are well-worked, rich, multi-layered compositions that speak volumes about the earnestness and depth of the musicians as well as the ingenuity of arranger Pablo Moya. This is a first class project that should not be missed. It's not the fastest, hottest, hippest or whatever. Ochún does not seem to be interested in any of those labels. This band is so soulful that even the one bolero, "Un Beso Y Un Adios," rang true and nearly conjured a tear from this jaded listener. And what a lush, moving version of the charanga classic "Camagüey." It's just gorgeous. Great job by vocalist Miguel Garcia. Also kudos to pianist-vocalist Paul Armstrong, conguero/timbalero Gabriel (Chinchilita) Machado, sax and flute player Ocavio Ponce, bassists Gregg August and Guillermo Edgehill and many others. Guests include Oriente Lopez and Mauricio Smith Jr., Meilana McLean Gillard and others. Note to up-and-coming bands out there: Study this CD hard. It's a gem. Very Highly Recommended. LEFTY PÉREZSalseros Unidos EsNtion Latino Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA EditorsPick: Wow, a *new* CD from first-class salsero Lefty Pérez. With his clear, commanding, tenor voice, Pérez takes control of his blistering, ready-for-action band with apparent ease. Like a hot knife through butter, he cuts through pure danceclub tracks like "Salseros Unidos," "Mentiras" and "Mi Puerto Rico," - a few of the best numbers on this CD, with savvy. The dozen original tracks here - many written by Mr. Pérez and arranged, clearly with experienced salsa know-how - mostly by Milton Sesentón and Victor "Papo" Ortiz, are so good, it begs to ask "where has this guy been?" Check out the shear force he's able to create with his composition "Guaya Guaya" (with Alfredo De La Fe, no less, on violin). But the entire CD ranks right up there with some of the best salsa to have come out this year. There's simply no filler material here, no corn meal or drippy ballads. Just unadulterated, unrelenting, salsa virtuosity culminating with "Que Grata Reunion," the perfect ending to Salseros Unidos. On this track, Pérez is joined by some of salsa royalty: Richie Ray, Bobby Cruz, Giovanny Hidalgo, Nelson Gonzalez, Cheito Quinones, and Ruben Rodriguez. Yeah, no kidding. In summary, here's a potent, rich, double espresso disguised as a salsa CD - it will have your pulse rate up in seconds. And with none of his earlier solo work currently available, not even his previous release, the 1997 "Soy Tuyo," a new release by Lefty Pérez is a pretty big deal here. And this one's a killer, folks. A dance party supreme - a big DJ Alert! Very Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $15.98 • Click here to Order Salseros Unidos Now! REAL CHARANGAReal Charanga Real Charanga / original import Category: DANCE TRADITIONS; CHARANGA; COLOMBIA EditorsPick: A superlative charanga tipica release, out of Bogotá, Colombia no less. Founded by violinist Daniel Diaz Ortega in 2003, Real Charanga can rock hard, like on the iron-fisted "Hoy." And on "Volver," Julio Rojas isn't shy about adding funk to his bass-lines. The point is, this is no timid, pedestrian charanga. It's charanga con cojones. Listen to how Ortega transforms "Lágrimas Negras" - a classic traditional Cuban cover - into a powerhouse of a dance number. "Guangancó," an adventurous roller-coaster hunk of charanga beauty, will have you rethinking your concept of a charanga. If you thought you knew charanga, man, play this track loud. The classic Pedro Flores composition "Obsesión" is handled with equal artistry, with an extended, twisting, jazz-charanga break. Man, this is good stuff. Andrés Niño's arrangement of Henry Mancini's "Inspector Charanga," is yet another license to explore beyond the edges of this genre. This is a band worth watching out for. This debut project is pretty amazing. Where can they go from here? I, for one, will be listening. With lyrics provided in both spanish and english. Very Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Real Charanga Now! LITTLE JOHNNY RIVERO "PEQUEÑO JOHNNY"Pasos Gigantes - CD & DVD Set Rumba Jams Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA EditorsPick: What a nice surprise! Little Johnny Rivero, the first-call percussionist who has played with Ismael Quintana, Cheo Feliciano, Descarga Boricua, Domingo Quiñones, Mulenze and many other great bands, has release a smart, no-nonsense salsa project that oozes with New York veteran know-how. As an orchestra leader, Mr. Rivero has created a rich, full sound and his hard driving percussive finesse is guaranteed to keep the dancers moving- he's brought in high caliber players like Spanish Harlem Orchestra's Peter Nater and Raul Agraz. A terrific job by singers Manny Mieles and Pedro Martinez. Listen to "Ay! Mujeres," and the hauntingly beautiful "Mi Yambu" with the great Nelson Gonzalez on tres. With top notch arrangements, mostly by Eric Figueroa and Andre Hernandez, Pasos Gigantes features special guests Papo Lucca, Giovanni Hidalgo, Alfredo De La Fe and Nelson Gonzalez. This CD comes with a bonus four track DVD, a live performance from New York City. Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Pasos Gigantes - CD & DVD Set Now! ROBERTO ROENA Y SU APOLLO SOUNDSr. Bongó Roan Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO EditorsPick: Oomph! This one's brimming with swing, brother. Here's a fresh salsa project that will breathe life into any party. What more would you expect from a project led by maestro Roena that includes pianists Willie Sotelo and Papo Lucca? Hows' about heavy hitter timbalero Tito D'Gracia? Or a solid wall of coro made up of Luisito Carrion, Darvel Garcia, and Domingo Quiñonez? Singers Hector Tempo Alomar and Javier Marrero never sounded better: Listen to the drive on the Eric Figueroa composition "Tin Tin Ton Ton" - *the* jewel in the crown, in this listener's opinion, or the fiery track "Abre Tu Corazón." The material here feels totally vital and essential. Includes two versions of the killer tribute "Por Siempre Anibal" (Anibal Vázquez) - one of them being a brilliant Puente-esque big band version with guests Cachete Maldonado, Tommy Villariny, Angie Machado and many others. Legendary Roena himself is in top form here, and his performance on Sr. Bongó would draw the respect and awe of bongoceros of any age. This is the real deal, folks. Salsa the way it ought to be. A big DJ Aljert, and a must-have: Very Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $15.98 • Click here to Order Sr. Bongó Now! TELMARYA Diario BIS / original import Category: POP/OTHER; HIP HOP; CUBA EditorsPick: A Diario, the powerhouse debut release by Cuban singer-songwriter Telmary, is part of the new wave of Cuban pop music that defies categorization. Produced by Roberto Carcasses - who seems to be the eye of the storm of this Cuban musical revolution - and Yusa, A Diario often utilizes hip hop as a springboard to launch a barrage of fist-in-the-air vocal poetry and densely layered sounds that borrow from technology, nature and pop music. This is hip hop rock on such a totally fresh new level that it demands a new name - no hop, post hop, whatever. There are moments when timba tries to take control, as on "Que Equivoca'o." But Telmary is too strong to relinquish control. Her voice never raises, but maintains such authority that you just have to get out of her way. This is one of the more interesting releases to come out of Cuba in years. Check out "Mr. God," sung in english, as the singer appeals "...But it's not fair, we are not a zero; we are walking in the same trip; Mister God, Mister Mad, Mister Rambo; Go go easy, not so fast... come to my, come to my flow." Damn, this is good stuff. There's too much to talk about here; listen to what she does with "Marilu," Van Van's early rock and roll hit. A Diaro features guests Descemer, Athanai, Kumar, Yusa and others. Whatever you think about Telmary, one thing is for sure. She's a contender - an artist whose time is now. Very Highly Recommended. (BP) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order A Diario Now! AFRICANDOKetukuba Sterns / original import Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; AFRICA EditorsPick: Africando, the Afro-Salsa supergroup is back. Fourteen years after the historic first meeting of the best singers from Senegal and the best Latin musicians in New York, "Ketukuba" , their seventh album is ready. "Ketukuba" is a tribute to the late Gnonnas Pedro, Benin's favourite son, who sang with Africando from 1996 until his death in 2004. The title song, was his last recording. Medoune Diallo, who earned his reputation with Orchestre Baobab before casting his lot with the nascent Africando in 1992, sings a duet with his son, Lodia Mansour, a rising star in Senegal today. This album also introduces two other young but already seasoned Senegalese singers to Africando's worldwide fans: Pascal Dieng of Super Cayor and Basse Sarr of Orchestre Afro-Salsa de Dakar. Africando stalwarts Amadou Ballake and Sekouba Bambino are in top form. American salsero Joe King gives a rendition of "Nina Nina" that may well become the definitive version of the Fania All-Stars classic. Congolese star Madilu System joins Africando for a sparkling Latinate version of "Mario," the landmark hit he originally recorded with Franco's T.P.O.K. Jazz in 1985. And he sings it even better now! Nelson Hernandez, who has worked with Kekele as well as with Celia Cruz, Oscar D'Leon and many other Latin stars, wrote arrangements that allow such top-tier musicians as pianist Junito Davila, trumpeter Gazo Jaime and percussionists Roberto and Luis Quintero to shine. As always, producer Ibrahima Sylla brings extraordinary talents together and elicits brilliant performances from them. Very Highly Recommended. Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Ketukuba Now!
Here’s a list that suggests that the future has arrived. Some of the best records of the year are frankly experimental, or veer drastically from the laws of tropical dance music — Goza Pepillo, Haydee, Descemer, Angá. And the Latin Jazz entrants, including Ignacio Berroa, Rubalcaba and Francisco Mela are moving forward with great haste. Pedro Giraudo, from Argentina via New York, is part of a growing wave of New York based Latin Americans mixing what has happened in their countries with the sophistication of jazz educated musicians here. As for mainstream salsa, it’s doing well, even if it’s often not coming from Puerto Rico, New York or Cuba. The recordings are a good sign intellectual activity is percolating all over the place, and in so many distinct forms. Whether the audience follows is another matter. It’s up to you… Watrous' Picks of 2006 LOS ASES DE LA TIMBAAquí Están Los Ases Envidia / original import Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA EditorsPick: Man, this is the stuff, a totally non-stop, real timba recording, featuring some of the best singers produced by the bands Charanga Habanera and Charanga Forever. But the music is as much a star as the singers, bouncing on the amazingly funky bass playing of Pablo Pedro. From the opening, driven tumbao through the breaks and thick coros and the inspired singing, this is the sort of project that makes timba sound classic. It has everything, new sounding beats, and lots of melodies in the coros, breakdowns all over the place, great singing. And it's not afraid of the late night long haul, with some tracks pushing seven minutes (though I'd like to hear the rest of the tape, given that there a bunch of fade outs). The singers - Tirso Duarte, Michel Maza and Mandy Cantero - give each track a work out, and they're joined by a fantastic coro that includes Mayito, along with the singers. I mean, just the breakdowns alone - listen to Cuenta Con Los Santos, where the trombones blare over the percussion - are worth the album itself; there's just so much arranging and playing inspiration. This one's in the car, in the living room, also. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order Aquí Están Los Ases Now! IGNACIO BERROACodes Blue Note Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ EditorsPick: Those musicians who can navigate between the American system of swing and Cuba's rhythmic complexities, and make it sound right, are super rare. The two languages are very, very difficult, and learning one doesn't mean you can handle the other. Along comes Berroa, who has been negotiating the two systems for decades. And he's put together an album of Afro Cuban jazz that is deeply intelligent and more than capable. He's joined by Gonzalo Rubalcaba - whose own studies in American jazz have been documented over the last twenty years as his playing changes - along with perhaps the best group a drummer could buy, including the some of the great Latin jazz musicians in New York, including Ed Simon, David Sánchez, John Patitucci, Felipe LaMoglia, Armando Gola, Giovanni Hidalgo, Tomas Cruz, Philbert Armenteros, Jorge Iglesias, and Santiago Nani. It's hard-ass swing that he's going after, using Chick Corea's "Matrix," Wayne Shorter's "Pinocchio," Dizzy Gillespie's "Woody 'N You" along with "La Comparsa" (by Lecuona), an original, and a piece by Jobim. There's some fusion elements here, like Rubalcaba's electric keyboards; at times the music gives off a Miles Davis electric feel - see "Joao Su Merced" - which goes into elements of Afro-Cuban religious music. All great, funky serious music, and a primer on how to orchestrate small group music from behind a drum kit. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Codes Now! DESCEMERSiete Rayo Universal Category: POP/OTHER; POP LATIN; CUBA EditorsPick: The latest entry into the modern Cuban pop/exile explosion. Descemer helped start Yerba Buena, and went on his own way, and the music is loaded with all sorts of stuff, arab lute playing over hip hop beats, coros, women singers, lots of studio technique. There's rock stuff mixed it, along with funny English sections, horn lines, acoustic guitars, samples of older Cuban music. Ska rhythms show up, pan Caribbean beats, and lots of intelligence. Fastchat rapping, in Spanish. For whatever reason, this record has pretty much disappeared from the market place. Pick it up now before it vanishes, it's the sound of the future, and a pretty great future it'll be. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Siete Rayo Now! MIGUEL ANGA DIAZEchu Mingua World Circuit / original import Category: LATIN JAZZ; AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ; CUBA EditorsPick: Another record that defies the stereotype of the stodgy, fabricated music of Buena Vista. Anga, one of the great Cuban percussionists of his generation, living in Paris, has put together a recording that takes into account pretty much everything that can be taken into account. There are heavy tumbaos, there are hip hop-like experiments in layering music, there's singing, and coros and hard, hard playing. Like the music of Kip Hanrahan, the music here feels cinematic, as if it were taking the listener on a trip. What Anga has done is simple: taken what he likes in music, whether it be a string orchestra or the amplified slap of his conga, and turned it into something distinct, modern and personal. Boy is this good, a major piece of modern, experimental music. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order Echu Mingua Now! PEDRO LUIS FERRERNatural Escondida Category: SALSA/SON; SON, GUARACHA, GUAJIRA; CUBA EditorsPick: A sheer, unmitigated masterpiece, hot on the tail of his last masterpiece, Rústico. Ferrer, recording it all in his own studio in Cuba, joined by his daughter on vocals, another singer/guitarist, and a percussionist, puts together dense music that bears some relationship to the son, but is deeply complicated rhythmically. And on top of that, the vocal arrangements are so profound as to make this record a vocal choir feature. Uh, and then there's the songwriting, which would shame Bobby Z, ah, Bob Dylan, or Pauly Simon or any other of our geniuses of Ferrer's generation; let's not even talk about his history of standing up to the fascism of the local government. Check out "Vida Me Da," a piece of percussion and voice, and the way the voices are layered, and how his daughter breaks out of the chorus for some polyphony, joined then by more voices that at times sound bitter, almost like the Bulgarian Women's' Choir. And Ferrer is deep into the folkloric (which in Cuba isn't folkloric, it just is), and through the record the European blends with the African, melodies that invoke so much meaning, rhythms that do the same. At times the music sounds, in a passing way, like popular Cuban music. It isn't. There isn't anything like this stuff anywhere, with complicated music mixing with narratives that are at once casual, and then achingly formal and dignified. And very few people deal with sex like he does, understanding loss and lust, and how they might join up. Phew. Not Highly Recommended Enough. (Peter Watrous) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order Natural Now! PEDRO GIRAUDODesconsuelo PG Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ EditorsPick: Part of a growing trend of New York based Latin American composers to use their jazz training to incorporate music from their homelands, Desconsuelo is a special piece of work. It's broad, dramatic and majestic. Giraudo's arrangements draw from early Ellington, and Gil Evans, and modern big band orchestration and work over traditional rhythms from Argentina. The band's made up of American musicians, and they take on the music and leave it perfectly realized. There are elements of tango, and classical music and jazz; at times the music sounds like a Carla Bley project. Giraudo plays bass, but his instrument really is the band. This is modern jazz and Latin music at its best. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Desconsuelo Now! EL GRAN COMBOArroz Con Habichuela Sony Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO EditorsPick: The great orchestra hasn't put out an album since 2004's Aquí Estamos Y... ¡De Verdad!, so Arroz con Habichuela's long overdue from one of the major bands in the history of Puerto Rican music. Rafael Ithier's idea and band are still intact, producing some of the most subtle salsa in existence, perfectly constructed and perfectly played, never relying on the blast or volume to make up for ability. And what material: from the instantly memorable coros on "Si La Ves Por Ahi" to the amazing, almost unheard of tempo on "Arroz con Habichuela" (which, weirdly enough, sounds like something that Pupy, in Cuba, might play), there isn't a mistake on the album. But let me get back to the perfection here: listen to how the bell on "Esa Mujer" changes patterns in the beginning of the tune to juice the last few bars before the bridge; it's so careful and sophisticated. And strangely enough, the recording makes the band sound small, and almost live; the recording makes the music realistic, as if you were listening in a small hall to a rehearsal. So much the better. The reduction in size makes the glory of the orchestra that much more evident, without hiding anything behind too much echo or production gloss. The brilliance is all there in the band, begging to be turned up, lived with. A masterpiece. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $15.98 • Click here to Order Arroz Con Habichuela Now! HAYDÉE MILANESHaydee EMI/Capitol / original import Category: POP/OTHER; POP LATIN; CUBA EditorsPick: The daughter of Pablo Milanes turns in her first album, and it's often stunning, a mixture of latin pop and the pop experimentalism of Cuba's modern master Descemer, who wrote all the tunes. What a voice, deep with a thoughtful sensuality. Smart songs, often with a wide river of Afro Cuban belief running through them, let her sing calmly. Texturally, the album, full of sampled sounds, brims with surprises. If it has any precedent, it's the albums of Brazilians like Lenine or Caetano Veloso. There's nothing like this in Cuba, and it's the next step, taking the country into the modern world. Highly Recommended, and looking anxiously for the next one. (Peter Watrous) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order Haydee Now! FRANCISCO MELAMelao Ayva Musica / original import Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ EditorsPick: Damn. What a great record. Mela, a drummer from Cuba who teaches at Berklee and plays in Jane Bunnett's group, has made a disc that captures some serious improvisatory knowledge. It's acoustic, and features simply some of the best soloists in the jazz world, including the great saxophonists Joe Lovano and George Garzone. They're joined by Lionel Loueke and Nir Felder on guitars and Peter Salvo on acoustic bass. The music, modern, exploratory jazz, is constantly shifting in intensity, in part because of Mela's carefully calibrated accompaniments. It's sympathetic music, full of generosity and giving, contemporary jazz at it's best and most human. It begs you to come back and listen to it; it's so full of nooks and crannies of intelligence and refinement. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $18.98 • Click here to Order Melao Now! GOZA PEPILLOInter-Activo BIS / original import Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ; CUBA EditorsPick: Yup, here's the good stuff. Like in a lot of places, jazz musicians are coming to some conclusion about how to use their learning. Roberto Carcasses, pianist from Havana and a musical family, has constructed a music founded in jazz but using singers and rappers in an avant pop way. It's funky, and it reminds me a bit of say Sergeant Garcia, but better musically. Finally some contemporary Cuban music that doesn't take suspension of disbelief to be swallowed. This is some pop that's heavy, and up to date. At times it seems like intimate folk/pop, then hard Latin Jazz. And check out how knowing is their version of the Beatles' "I Want You (She's so Heavy). This one lives in the CD player. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $17.98 • Click here to Order Inter-Activo Now! GONZALO RUBALCABASolo Blue Note Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ EditorsPick: A long time ago, Rubalcaba moved into the group of musicians whose work will last. This solo recording shows why, with Rubalcaba moving through a set whose quietude suggests discipline and restraint. Its beauty, well, that's another thing, and the music is beautiful, dense with grace, rife with silence and utterly evocative. There's nothing like Rubalcaba now, and while he thanks his mentors Chic Corea and Herbie Hancock - and the whole thing reminds you a bit of Keith Jarrett - this is something different, new. Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous) Price: $16.98 • Click here to Order Solo Now! Reissues
This year was both very good and not so good on the Latin reissue front. March saw the launch of a major reissuing programme by the new owners of the Fania catalogue, and (unavoidably) these titles dominate my 2006 top ten chart. The CDs came with new liner notes, in some cases previously unpublished personnel credits, and digital remastering. Talking of audio quality, I got all excited about the appearance of reissues on the Sacodis and TR/TTH labels, but some of these were marred by poor sound quality. One ray of hope is the new Bronx-based Latin Soul Records label who seem to have faith that physical CD reissues of obscure albums still have a market, having released very rare Ghetto Records titles by Joe Acosta and La Fantastica at the end of the year. Salsa International released three more rare titles in November painstakingly mastered by the UK-based Ian Morrison, and Ralph Cartagena has been gradually reissuing riches from his Rico Records vault. These unpretentiously feature the artwork and information from the original vinyl album jackets, and tend to sound very good too. 2006 saw the long awaited reissue of three must-have albums Grupo Fascinación made for Rico in the mid-'80s, one of which figures in the top five of my list. I trust that Mr. Cartagena's New Year resolutions include the reissuing of three wonderful albums Venezuela's Nati y su Orquesta made for his Combo Records label in the mid-'80s? Child's Picks of 2006 MARKOLINO DIMONDBrujeria - Limited Edition Fania / Emusica - Remastered Edition Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK EditorsPick: I've never made it a secret on Descarga.com that I am a considerable admirer of the inventive African American pianist, arranger and composer Mark "Markolino" Dimond and arch vocal stylist Angel Canales. Despite appearances this was Dimond's debut as a leader initially issued in 1971 under the title Brujeria on the Vaya label...Larry Harry and Johnny Pacheco were the co-producers and co-recording directors and Harvey Averne was the executive producer. Larry wrote in the liner notes to Brujeria: "I first heard Mark 'Markolino' Dimond play three years ago with a new band called Willie Colón y su Orchestra. At that time I thought, 'One day he will have a band of his own.' That day has come. Conjunto Sabor is Mark's band. He has written all the music, lyrics and arrangements for this album. It is all Mark Dimond. His piano playing, a cross between typical Cuban and progressive jazz, is superb. He has chosen Angel Canales for his singer. Although it is Angel's first recording, you would have to look very far to top his performance." It is an understatement to say Brujeria / Mas Sabor is Highly Recommended; it is absolutely essential!! ALEGRE ALL STARSTe Invita Fania / Emusica - Remastered Edition Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK EditorsPick: "I'm not intending to add much here to what has been written elsewhere about the importance of the Alegre label and the historic New York studio descarga sessions convened by Al Santiago. This is also a cop-out from recommending a particular Alegre All-Stars album because 'Te Invita' is a compilation. It was originally prepared in 1992 for Charly Records in the UK by compositing six tracks from the 1976 compilation 'They Just Don't Makim Like Us Anymore' on Alegre, which culled tracks from The Alegre All-Stars Vols. 1 to 4 (1961 to 1966), together with four tracks from the Alegre All-Stars' 1977 release 'Perdido' (Vol. 5 or 6?), then subsequently issued in the USA. The artwork is a modification of the original front cover of 'Perdido' (Vol. 5 or 6?). Nitpicking detail aside, 'Te Invita' is an excellent entry point to the Alegre All-Stars. However, if you already own this CD, that is no excuse for not buying all the Alegre All-Stars' volumes as well as other titles where they masquerade under the names of Kako's After Hour Orchestra, Cesta and Salsa All-Stars." (John Child, 99/00 Catalog) "The brainchild of former bandleader, saxophonist, arranger, philosopher and quintessential Nuyorican turned record store owner, producer Al Santiago. Al assembled an all-star ensemble from the trenches in New York City's bustling underground Afro-Cuban dance band scene in the 1960s. Names like Kako, Charlie Palmieri, Frankie Malabe and 'Chombo' Silva were highlighted as soloists in a jam session (Descarga) setting showcasing their virtuosity and legendary drinking style. Compiled from the six albums they did, this collection is a must!" (Bobby Sanabria, 98/99 Catalog) Price: $13.98 • Click here to Order Te Invita Now! GRUPO FASCINACIÓNTiburón Rico Records Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA EditorsPick: Tiburón is the follow-up to Fascinating Sounds (Rico Records, 1983) by this electrifying young New York salsa band, and not reissued until now. Key founder members, trumpeter Pete Nater, currently a member of the Grammy winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra, and pianist / arranger Roberto Navarro, acted as the album's recording directors. Navarro arranged the outstanding title track co-written by lead singer Johnny Rivera and the late Ivan "Palomita" Conde, Fascinación's tres guitarist and known for his distinctive timbre as a coro singer. Palomita takes notable tres solos on "Tiburón" and "Cosas De Mi Tierra", arranged by today's leading salsa pop producer Sergio George. Sammy "Timbalón" Pagán took over the bongo chair on Tiburón and the band's final Rico outing Salsa Vice (1986). You should really scoop-up all three Fascinación CDs, but if you can only manage one, start with Tiburón. Highly Recommended. See also: Fascinating Sounds and Salsa Vice. One of my favourite Típica albums, the project has a wonderfully loose quality and is packed with solos from the band's virtuoso personnel. Very Highly recommended. CHARLIE PALMIERIEl Gigante Del Teclado Fania / Emusica - Remastered Edition Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK EditorsPick: Tico Records producer Joe Cain persuaded Morris Levy, whose Roulette Records owned the Tico and Alegre imprints, to reactivate the dormant Alegre label. Joe invited Charlie Palmieri, who had just been doing small club dates, back into the new fold to make a fine trio of albums between 1972 and 1975 with Vitín Avilés on lead vocals, the first of which was El Gigante Del Teclado. Reflecting his jazz and descarga proclivities, Charlie's arrangements of the seven tracks built-in oodles of space for solos, especially from himself on piano and organ and trumpeter Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros. Coinciding with the boogaloo / Latin soul fad, it's mix of jazz (which was Ray's "other life"), soul and raw barrio swing make Acid one of the greatest recordings to emerge during this period in the history of New York Latin music. Tito Puente Y Celia Cruz Fania / Emusica - Remastered Edition Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK EditorsPick: "One day in 1965, I received a call from Tito (Puente). He told me he would like to work with me on a steady basis, and I told him that I would be honoured," recalled Celia Cruz in her posthumously published autobiography My Life. "He told me to wait for a call from a man called Morris Levy, and a few days later, Mr. Levy signed me to record for Tico Records. In January 1966, I began working with Tito on our first album." Cuba Y Puerto Rico Son was recorded at New York's National Recording Studios and courtesy of José Madera, TP's musical director for 14 years, details of the musicians who played on the date are listed below. Note that the trombone section features the revered Barry Rogers and Jose Rodrigues from Eddie Palmieri's trailblazing Conjunto La Perfecta. Celia admitted that none of her albums with Tito were big hits, "although we did have a few successful singles." She believed: "the lack of commercial success with those albums was due to a lack of advertising, since the albums themselves were wonderful." Cuba Y Puerto Rico Son features a mixed programme of Latin rhythms and a dose of rock. With the privilege of hindsight, it's apparent that two of the album's most outstanding cuts are the guaracha-mambo "La Guarachera", written by the prominent sonero Chivirico Dávila, and the powerful guaguancó "No Hay Amigos" penned by the Cuban composer Eliseo Grenet. "La Guarachera" is effectively Celia's calling card heralding her new musical partnership: "Make way, here I bring in my voice a cordial greeting. Guarachera, the people call me. I with Tito Puente am going to dance guaracha." In the song's added mambo section, a brief call and response exchange of scat vocals from Celia and timbal phrases from TP is followed by a full timbales firework display from El Rey. Dávila also composed the bomba "La Plena Bomba Me Llama" and merengue salve "Salve Pa' Tí". Thanks to José Madera for musician credits and additional details. Highly recommended. FANIA ALL STARSLive at the Cheetah Vol. 1 Fania / Emusica - Remastered Edition Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK EditorsPick: The first salsa records I acquired were by the Fania All Stars, and among the first handful of their albums I purchased were Live At The Cheetah, Vols. 1 & 2 (1971), Live At Yankee Stadium, Vols. 1 & 2 (1975) and Live (1978). They blew me away and fueled a passion to dig deeper into the Fania catalogue and its history. Among the items I have collected is a 1973 account of the early years of the Fania All Stars by Fania Records co-founder Jerry Masucci, in which he said the following about the Cheetah gig: "We held the concert on a Thursday night (26 August 1971). The Cheetah held 2000 people and no one thought we would sellout. But the night of the concert 4000 people squeezed into the Cheetah and the lines outside stretched around the block. Volumes 1 and 2 of Live At The Cheetah, which were recorded that night, became the biggest selling Latin albums ever produced by one group from one concert." The Cheetah concert was filmed and formed the backbone of the electrifying documentary Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa), which premiered in New York on 19 July 1972 and played a key role in launching salsa on the worldwide stage. What an absolutely superb compilation of swinging vintage, and quite rare, Panamanian dance material from the '60s and '70s. I'll use the term salsa here with a broad stroke, 'cause the stuff you'll hear on this CD also encompasses Latin funk, ie boogalu, soul, jazzy descargas, calypso, and one of the coolest cumbia's you'll ever hear. Some of the featured bands may be familiar to hard core collectors but, quite honestly, only Bush y Sus Magnificos and Freddy y Sus Afro Latinos were known to this listener. Listen to the names of some of the other bands: Los Exagerados, The Exciters, Los Mozambiques, Los Silvertones, Papi Brandao y Sus Ejecutives, Maximo Rodriguez y Sus Estrellas Panameñas... sound cool? You have no idea just how cool this material is. Miles Cleret and Roberto Ernesto Gyemant, co-collaborators who compiled this material, have to be complimented on doing a first-class job. BAMBOLEOKnock Out: Lazarito Valdés Y Bamboleo & Manolito Simonet Y Su Trabuco En Concierto DVD & CD Set BIS / original import Category: DVD; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA EditorsPick: Splash some water in my face, will you? I could be dreaming here. Whoa... Knock Out is, by far, the best live modern Cuban dance concert DVD we have come across to date. It took seven camera men (yes, seven) to capture the intensity and heat of this milestone show. Recorded live in September of 2005 at the Teatro Karl Marx, Knock Out brings two of Cuba's heaviest dance bands, Manolito y Su Trabuco and Bamboleo, together in an event that gave the audience something to tell their grandkids about. Billed as a heavyweight battle between two boxers, the DVD opens, hysterically, with Manolito and Lázaro Valdés donning their boxing gear and stepping into the ring - er, stage. What happens next is more powerful than a punch in the stomach by Mike Tyson: untethered heart stopping timba-salsa born by fusing the two mega-band's powerhouse musicians and gorgeous singers into one bone-crunching unit. Individually these two bands are steel-riveted army tanks, but together ...well let's just say there's nothing like it. Valdés and Manolito go head-to-head on their respective keyboards, piling notes and montunos on top of one another: making each other smile with their fiery chops. The audience, dancing and singing with the band, was completely and justifiably intoxicated as they soaked in numbers like "Todo Lo Bonito," "Tu Me Dijiste Mentiras," "Marcando La Distancia," "Ya No Hace Falta" and "Locos Por Mi Habana." This is modern Cuban dance music at is best: complex, driven, and almost overwhelmingly sexy. Lázaro Valdés takes the opportunity to front-line his two new secret weapons: Tania Pantoja Palmera and Yuleydis Olazabál, the stunning women of Bamboleo whose vast vocal powers are matched by their, umm, capacity to gyrate. Other singers of note are Ronnys Lopez, Enrique Castellanos, Sixto Llorente, Ricardo Amaray and Lázaro Díaz. If that isn't enough, the DVD comes with a bonus track of the superband performing a pristine, sizzling, version of Manolito's "Se Rompierón Los Termómetros." Comes with an audio CD too. 110 minutes of Cuban musical bliss. Multizone. NTSC. Dolby stereo I can't say this more clearly: get this DVD now! An absolute Must-Have. Very Highly Recommended. Nine selections from three different public drumming celebrations illustrate drum rhythms, songs and dances for the Orishas, including rare footage of the Bembe Macagua drums and an unusual segment of Palo songs accompanied by Aña. In addition, there are interviews with Alfredo Calvo, Elder of the Egwado branch of Santeria, and two drumming demonstrations - Palo rhythms played on Aña and three styles of drumming for the Orishas: Majino (Arara from Perico), Sabalú (Arara from Matanzas), and Macagia (Lucumí from Matanzas) 90 minutes. Lyric subtitles are included for all the songs. Interviews are in Spanish with English subtitles. [from the liners] Kabiosile continues to generate our respect and further interest. Here they offer a direct, honest insiders perspective of how practitioners in Cuba elicit the attention of the orishas. Both the picture and sound are of high quality, which is helpful to appreciate the subtleties of the sacred batá drums. Ceremonies, in the form of cantos, güiro or bembé, are interspersed with concise question and answer segments (filmed separately and nicely edited) featuring some of the percussionists. CANDIDO CAMEROHands Of Fire - A DVD Documentary By Ivan Acosta MVD Category: DVD; LATIN JAZZ EditorsPick: Ivan Acosta's documentary focuses on Candido's contribution to the world of Cuban music, American Jazz and Latin Jazz. Through conversations, performances and testimonies, "Candido: Hands of Fire", grabs the audiences' attention all the way till the end. Candido Camero is a musical giant hailed as one of the greatest Cuban percussionists to come to the United States. He has played with more than two hundred great musicians, including: Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Bobby Capó, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Chico O'Farrill, Ray Charles, Mongo Santamaria, John Coltrane, Randy Weston, Billy Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Graciela, Celia Cruz, La Lupe, Bobby Sanabria, Machito and Lecuona, amongst the world's most popular musicians. [from the liners] Here's one of the better biographic documentaries I have come across. It's the story of legendary percussionist Candido Camero as told by Candido, music historians, and musicians he's worked with. And while the DVD includes many performances that underline his melodic three drum playing, the highlight for me is an informal improvisational session with only Candido and the great bassist Andy Gonzalez. It is truly an amazing piece that helps to articulate, musically, the melodic complexity and beauty that Candido typifies. Also with Chico Alvarez, Tony Bennett, Federico Brito Ruiz, Dave Chesky, Luc Delannoy, Graciela, Juanito Marquez, Nelson "El Flaco" Padrón, Jorge Fernandeo Rodriguez, Bobby Sanabria, Ray Santos, Dr. Billy Taylor, Randy Weston and many others. This one's the bomb, Salsa on Steroids; the stuff you hear at the Salsa Congress and ask "What was that!?" This new Diego Gale project is destined to become a pop salsa classic, but there are some caveats. In front of Gale's primo rhythm section, King Bongo's singers are John William Upegui, Jairo Andrade, Jonathan Bentancur, and Oti Osorio. But does that matter? Several of the tracks here are extended versions of Sonora Carruseles tracks ("Micaela," "La Comay" etc.). Whatever the name is on the cover, Gale Productions are Gale productions. It's a widely held view that, while there's not much difference or individuality to the bands produced by the Gale factory (just change a few singers), the product is a perfect means to an end. This is a well greased, finely tuned machine that has taken over. Listen to the timbales in overdrive on "Hasta Que Se Rompa El Cuero" - it's got breakneck speed almost beyond what's humanly possible. This is the track that will bring the house down. On Academia De Baile, Gale went wild. Here, he looked deep into his bag of tricks and selected only those hooks he knew would work. And those hooks are sharp. Every track here is white-hot sizzling, and guaranteed to have the dancers scrambling to find a place on the dancefloor. This pivotal show was previously released as a 2-CD set - something I reviewed quite favorably when it was released in 2003. Well, the DVD is equally collectable, and no wonder: it's virtually the same track listing as the CD set. But here, of course, you get to see the band performing - which is pretty special especially for those of us who haven't yet had the pleasure of attending a live Selecta show. Below is my review from '03. It still holds true ...I've changed "2-CD" to read "2-DVD": One of the most popular salsa bands in Puerto Rico for three decades has not, in my opinion, received their due recognition outside of the island. Perhaps this 30th anniversary 2-DVD live straight-ahead, no nonsense salsa package will set the record straight. Very well recorded and mixed for a live show, this release packs in 20 of Mr. Leavitt's most well known titles like "Somos El Son, "Payaso", "El Buen Pastor" and "Jibaro Soy." There is a lot of salsa here, and it's all good. Pianist and composer Mr. Leavitt represents pure, unadulterated Puerto Rican salsa at its best. The real deal. Very Highly Recommended.
