Nina Lenart
"Nina Lenart grew up in L.A. hearing her mother's records of Tito Puente, Machito and Antonio Carlos Jobim. For the past fifteen years or so, she's been a deejay on "Alma del Barrio," a democratically run, stubbornly independent public radio show (KXLU/88.9 FM) that broadcasts every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. "We have a wonderful, ever-growing audience of rumberos, salseros, mambo-niks and others who love great music, and our format is as wide as our audience's requests and our staff members' tastes," says Nina. "I love many genres of Latin music, jazz, and other musical forms that my mentors, friends and ears have led me to discover. Choosing an unlimited number of favorites from Descarga's massive catalog proved to be more difficult than I first thought...as I hit #100 of my 'can't live without' releases, I realized I had to redefine my focus. So, I've self-imposed a limit of thirty, and kept my selections to recent favorites.""

Abelardo Barroso Y La Orquesta Sensacion, Bruca Maniguá Con Abelardo Barroso Y La Sensacion
CD (ARO 108),
"There's a timeless quality to Barroso's haunting voice, which influenced many vocalists after him. Also, a funkiness, which is apparent in this release. It's full of great cuts such as 'Changüi Monte.' (I know this is cheating, but if you like this one, don't miss Guajiro de Canagua [TL-11132], Tiene Sabor [Antilla 11; TL-11951] and La Cumbancha [TL-11158].)"

CD (Crescent Moon/Epic 67319),Released 1995;

These two beautifully produced CDs are like a distillation of Cachao's massive body of work: elegant danzones, fiery descargas, amazing bass riffs, old and new material, and a dream orchestra. Lazaro Galarraga sings on Vol. 1, Rolando LaSerie on Vol. 2. Each cut is a gem."

Jerry Gonzalez, Rumba Para Monk - Jerry Gonzalez & Fort Apache Band
CD (Sunnyside SSC1036D),Released 1989;
"Combines the fire of Latin jazz with the coolness of be-bop. And, as always, top-notch musicianship. I especially love hearing Gonzalez on trumpet. I have not yet heard their most recent release (Moliendo Cafe), which I've heard is a knockout. Anything by this ensemble is highly recommended."
