Victor Rendón
"Victor Rendón, raised in the Corpus Christi, Texas, area, holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas School of Music. In 1980, he relocated to New York to pursue his interest in Afro-Cuban music and studied Latin percussion with Louis Bauzo, Frankie Malabe, and Johnny Almendra. Since then, he has backed up singers such as Vitin Aviles, Vicentico Valdés, Daniel Santos, and many others. He has been a staff drummer for WXTV and has performed with Marco Rizo, Mongo Santamaria, the Ray Santos Orchestra, the Manny Duran/Carlos 'Patato' Valdés Orchestra, the 'New' Xavier Cugat Orchestra, and various Broadway shows at the Westchester Broadway Theater. In 1991 he co-founded the Armando Rodriguez/Victor Rendón Latin Jazz Orchestra. They are scheduled to release their second CD in May 1998 on the Palmetto Records label. In addition to his playing schedule, he teaches instrumental music at P.S.63 in Manhattan and is a staff percussion instructor at the Boy's Harbor Performing Arts Center. Victor has also written two instructional books for Latin timbales as well as articles for "Drumfiles," "Percussive Notes," "Modern Drummer," and "Drum Magazine." Most recently he wrote the text and music transcription booklets for several DCI/Warner Bros. instructional videos by Giovanni Hidalgo and Changuito. He is also publisher-editor of the "Latin Percussionist Newsletter.""
