Rebeca Mauleón
"Pianist/composer Rebeca Mauleón has established herself on the Afro-Cuban music scene, having performed and recorded with such renowned artists as Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, the Machete Ensemble, Orquesta Batachanga, Carlos "Patato" Valdes, José Luis Quintana "Changuito," Grupo Irakere, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Steve Turré, Giovanni Hidalgo, Orestes Vilato, Alex Acuña, Pete Escovedo and many others. Rebeca is the author of the critically acclaimed "bible" of salsa music, "Salsa Guidebook for Piano and Ensemble" and continues a multi-faceted career as a teacher, lecturer, recording artist, commissioned composer and arranger and musicologist, specializing in Afro-Cuban music. "I consider myself fairly eclectic when it comes to listening to music. My background as a flamenco dancer for over 15 years, coupled with my intense love for Afro-Caribbean music in general, and Afro-Cuban music in particular, has turned me into a serious groove-oriented person. My favorites are Afro-Cuban jazz, Cuban dance music and folklore, especially rumba. I am definitely not into slick, over-produced pop, nor am I fond of "salsa romantica" or salsa with English lyrics. I think I can say that I have listened to music from all over the world, and there is very little I dislike.""

Here are some reviews by Rebeca Mauleón

Abelardo Barroso Y La Orquesta Sensacion, Bruca Maniguá Con Abelardo Barroso Y La Sensacion
CD (ARO 108),
"When I first heard Abelardo's voice, I fell in love with his unique tone and phrasing, and his almost frail quality. His renditions of "Bruca Maniguá" and "Suavecito" are classics."

Arsenio Rodriguez Y Su Conjunto, Arsenio Rodriguez Y Su Conjunto, Vol. 1
CD (Ansonia 1337),
"Anything by Arsenio is essential to the serious Cuban music fan, in particular anything featuring the voice of Miguelito Cuní and the trumpet playing of Félix Chappottín. Despite his tragic end, Arsenio left us with a musical legacy that will surely stand the test of time."

Batacumbele, En Aquellos Tiempos
CD (Disco Hit 1693),Released 1991;
"As much as I really love the first Batacumbele recording (Con Un Poco de Songo), I equally love this one. All of the tunes swing, and Jerry Medina sings his you-know-what off!! Giovanni Hidalgo always shines on anything he does, as do the rest of the outstanding musicians in this group. Batacumbele truly brought the word (and the concept) of songo to a broader audience, and they did it without watering down the original!"

Cal Tjader, Soul Sauce
CD (Verve/Poly. 521 668),Re-Issued 1994;
"My mother used to play this record over and over when I was a child, and I never tired of it. 'Soul Sauce (Wachi Wara)' always captivated me, and the song still sounds so contemporary. I remember singing along with Lonnie Hewitt's piano solo in 'Mamblues,' and going nuts with Armando Peraza's amazing conga playing. Definitely one of the best all-time Latin jazz recordings."

Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Mi Gran Pasion
CD (Universal/Pimienta 360613),Released 1991;Re-Issued 2004;
"By far one of the most amazing talents to emerge from Cuba, Gonzalo has arrived at his place among the great pianists of our time. Gonzalo grew up around his father's traditional charanga orchestra, and the sounds of the Cuban danzón. This, combined with his strong technical ability, and his love for classical music and jazz, is finally brought forth on this recording of danzones. Unlike his more fusion-oriented approach on other Grupo Proyecto recordings, this album blends the old with the new as he brings contemporary flavor to one of Cuba's most important musical styles."

Jerry Gonzalez, Rumba Para Monk - Jerry Gonzalez & Fort Apache Band
CD (Sunnyside SSC1036D),Released 1989;
"In addition to the wonderful musicians on this album, and exceptional arranging work by Jerry González, the music of one of the planet's most important composers, Thelonious Monk, shines. I am convinced that he wrote 'in clave,' and therefore his music lends itself perfectly to 'Latinization,' so to speak. The music is energetic and flowing, without being 'forced' into the Latin groove."

Los Van Van, Lo Ultimo En Vivo
CD (Qbadisc/BIS 9020/414),Released 1994;
"Finally, a recording by Los Van Van comes close to what they do live. It is still not the best quality - there are obvious problems with attempting a live recording in Cuba! But this record captures something of the intense energy that the group generates in performance. '¿Que Tiene Van Van?' is a testament to the group's never-ending popularity, and '¡Qué Sorpresa!' was the number one hit in Cuba in 1994. Another of my favorites is 'Un Socio,' a 'controversial' song about the black market in Cuba, and the various moral issues surrounding contemporary Cuban society today."

Tito Puente, Top Percussion
CD (BMG/Tropical Series 3264),Released 1957;Re-Issued 1993;
"Truly one of TP's best, featuring fellow giants Francisco Aguabella, Willie Bobo, Mongo Santamaría, Julito Collazo and others. Puente has over 100 LPs to his name, so it was very hard for me to pick just one! His career has spanned several decades and quite a few musical styles, and he's still going strong!"
