Bobby Sanabria
"New York City native Bobby Sanabria has performed and recorded with a virtual who's who from the world of jazz and Latin music, as well as with his own critically acclaimed ensemble, Ascensión. His diverse experience includes work with such luminaries as Mongo Santamaría, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D'Rivera, Chico O'Farrill, Celia Cruz, and the pioneering father of Afro-Cuban jazz, Mario Bauza. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, he is considered one of the most articulate spokespersons for the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition today and serves on the faculty of his alma mater as well as the faculties of the both the Drummer's Collective and the New School for Social Research in New York City. Mr. Sanabria is also the author of the three part video series "Getting Started On Congas" on DCI Video. "The tough part for me (as it was two years ago when I picked 25 choices from the first full catalog) is the incredible wealth of history that is represented here," says Bobby. "With that in mind I tried to make sure not to repeat myself and also kept in mind that the music's greatest growth occurred here in New York City. My philosophy is as before; one foot in the past, the other in the present and my head looking towards the future.""

Here are some reviews by Bobby Sanabria

Angel Canales, El Sentimiento Del Latino En Nueva York
CD (TTH 25199 / 8888),Released 1979;Re-Issued 1994;
Back in stock! Limited quantities...
Angel Canales, who once threw all of his music into the ocean, is one of Latin music's unsung heroes. A great vocalist with a very distinctive style, he has remained an enigma with virtually no airplay. This recording is a classic. His band smokes. Highly recommended.
- BP

"Released by Angel Canales in 1979 on his own label. Canales was as outspoken in the press about the injustices in the Latin music scene as he was flamboyant on stage. The progressive arrangments, mostly written by trumpeter Steve Guttman, were ahead of their time and the flamenco-like tremolo in Angel's voice gave him the moniker, 'El Differente.' This recording features his working band in top form. Check out the classic son, 'Soy del Monte,' with its trad/rad approach. The hippified merengue approach to the title cut, a perfect blend of jazz and Latin elements, showcases the creativity of this unsung hero and his group. " (Bobby Sanabria, 98/99 Catalog)

Jerry Gonzalez, Obatala - Jerry Gonzalez & Fort Apache Band
CD (Enja 5095),Released 1989;
Back in stock! Import title.
A jazz oriented outgrowth of the Grupo Folklorico experiments, Jerry's ensemble has evolved into a tightly knit quintet sound that in its early years was a much larger ensemble. This 1989 release, dedicated to the Yoruban deity 'Obatalá,' is a live date in Europe that captures the raw energy and virtuosity of the players involved. Jerry is a sensitive trumpeter and very musical conguero with a unique style. His brother Andy carries Cachao's legacy on bass, but with his own unique perspective as a jazz musician. 'Nuff said.

Various Artists, Cuba Classics 3 — New Directions In Cuban Music: ¡Diablo Al Infierno! ***
CD (Luaka Bop 9 45107-2 (OS4 Limited)),Released 1992;
The compilation ¡Diablo Al Infierno!: Cuba Classics III by pop/rock/world beat explorer David Byrne and Cubanophile Ned Sublette best exemplifies contemporary Cuban music and indicates where it’s headed. This compilation, as Cubanophiles will attest, is only the tip of the iceberg as far as what’s happening in contemporary cuban music, but for the novice and collector it is a good representation. Although Cuba has been closed off from the U.S., the symbiotic relationship continues to nourish both parties involved. Who knows what will happen when the island finally opens up? The powerbrokers in Miami are already in a struggle as to who gets what. Whatever happens, the music on this album is a testimony of the greatness of a culture that is constantly in evolution. In the 1950’s if you were hip you were down with the “Cuban Cool". How many parents of the “baby boom” generation danced the Mambo/cha-cha and went to Cuba for their vacations? Thanks to people like Byrne and Sublette we get another chance before the shit hits the fan.
With Irakete, Sintesis, Los Van Van, Pio Leyva, Los Blues, Dan Den, Zeus, NG La Banda and much more.

Cortijo Y Su Combo, Time Machine
CD (Musical Productions 6212),Re-Issued 1997;
"Legend has it that Puerto Rican nueva trova (new troubador singer) Roy Brown went to Cuba and laid this 'lost-in-the-promo shuffle' side on Chucho Valdez; he flipped; and hence Irakere was formed. I don't know how true that story is but I do know that this record is a definite must because you'll flip when you hear it. Cortijo, an icon in the history of Puerto Rican rhythm (bomba and plena to be exact), recorded this album with a band of young turks from the University of Puerto Rico who wished to stretch the limits of the island's folklore. Even the original cover art was futuristic with its time machine concept. Unfortunately, the CD you'll get has a new bikini laden bimbo and no liner notes. Arrangements by Pepe Castillo and the most prolific guitarist living today, Edgardo Miranda, showcase the Latin/fusion/jazz concept with Puerto Rican rhythms 'al maximo.' Recorded in 1974, originally released on Coro.

Machito And His Afro-Cubans, Kenya: Afro-Cuban Jazz
CD (Roulette/Capitol/Blue Note 22668),Released 1957;Re-Issued 1999;
"The band that was formed in 1940 by Mario Bauzá and his brother-in-law Frank Grillo (Machito) in New York City fused Cuban rhythms with jazz. This 1957 classic was inspired by the then newly formed republic of Kenya. Jazz soloists abound. Cannonball Adderley, Doc Cheatham, Candido, Patato and others highlighted in glorious big band fashion. Also check out 'Intimo Y Sentimental' (Tico 1123; Catalog #TL-11672.1) to hear Macho's sister Graciela, one of the greatest vocalists of our time, and other offerings in Descarga which showcase Macho's singing (example: 'Live At North Sea '82' TTH 1904; Catalog #TL-0298.1)."

Mario Bauza, Tanga
CD (Universal/Pimienta 360628),Released 1992;Re-Issued 2004;
"Featuring an incredible array of musicians in a big band setting, this is the album that brought the long under-recognized father of the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition into the press's and public's eye. Chico O'Farrill's five movement treatment of Mario's groundbreaking tune 'Tanga' is the highlight. A personal note: German producer Götz Wörner didn't even know who Mario was. He just happened to be walking by New York City's Symphony Space and saw there was an 80th birthday tribute to Mario featuring Dizzy Gillespie and others. He knew who Dizzy was, so he bought a ticket. The rest is history. Oh, by the way, you'll recognize the drummer. "

Mario Bauza, Tanga
CD (Universal/Pimienta 360628),Released 1992;Re-Issued 2004;
"The man who changed the course of 20th century music when he formed the Machito Afro-Cubans and fused jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythm recently passed away on June 11, 1993 at the ripe young age of 82. This album, done in 1992, brought this unsung hero into the public consciousness. It features a five movement treatment of his tune 'Tanga' by Chico O'Farrill and the 23 piece Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. P.S. The finest example of small group Afro-Cuban jazz to date. P.S. You might recognize the drummer."

Santana, Caravanserai
CD (Sony 31610),Released 1972;
"Santana always gets dissed by the die-hard 'Típico' crowd, but his unique fusion of jazz/rock/blues and Afro-Cuban music are directly responsible for influencing Irakere, Los Van Van and others. After commercial success with his first three albums, he produced this album after being turned on to John Coltrane by his drummer Mike Shrieve. It has everything from avant-garde jazz, middle eastern, rumba and Brazilian elements to spiritually uplifting lyrics; a masterpiece."

Tito Puente, Top Percussion / Dance Mania ****
CD (Bear Family 15687 (OS6)),Released 1958;Re-Issued 1993;
"Two classic Puente recordings that changed Latin music history, recorded in 1957-8, now on one CD. 'Top Percussion', (along with 'Puente In Percussion', also reissed on CD), features the Afro-Cuban rhythm section of timbales, bongo, and conga with only the bass showcasing each instrument's solo capabilities with virtuosos Puente, Mongo and Willie Bobo throwing down while Bobby Rodriguez on bass lays down the law. 'Dancemania' features Puente's big band in all of the popular Cuban dance styles: mambo, cha cha, guaguancó, etc. With Puente, Ray Santos and Gil Lopez charts that all burn. No wonder Dancemania has been the highest selling Latin dance album of all time. Oh, by the way, Santos Colón is on vocals and a young kid by the name of Ray Barretto had just taken Mongo's place while Monchito Muñoz replaced Willie Bobo for this album."

Rodriguez had one of the most superbly disciplined big bands of his day which was the perfect backdrop for his unique jazz influenced phrasing. I recommend this compilation because you get to hear not only Tito, but also his band, blowing hard on the classic jazz mambo 'Faggot's World.'"

Various Artists, Merengue: Dominican Music And Dominican Identity
CD (Rounder 1130),Released 1997;
"Many of my musical colleagues put down merengue stating it is simplistic, repetitive, etc.. That may be true of the commercial castrated crap on much of Latino radio today, but merengue has deep roots in African, French, German and Polish culture which all synthesized and crystallized in the Dominican Republic. True believers, there are many styles, and you can check them out here along with rare field recordings. ¡Que Viva La Tambora!"
