George De Stefano
"George De Stefano is a writer, political activist,and public health specialist. His writing has appeared in various publications, including "New York Newsday," "The Nation," "The Advocate," "Film Comment," and "VIA" (Voices in Italian Americana). He has been a fan of Afro-Cuban music since the mid-70s, when he hosted a music and public affairs program on WPKN-FM in Bridgeport, Connecticut. There he was first exposed to the music through another WPKN program, "La Esquina Latina." He credits that show's host, Luis Pomales, and his buen amigo, the late José Vigo, for his first lessons in the history and aesthetics of "la salsa." "I am a devotee of classic Cuban-based salsa and Afro-Cuban jazz,"says George. "I have low tolerance for salsa romantica (the collaborations of Louie Ramirez and Ray de la Paz being the rare exceptions) or for English-language salsa versions of Anglo-pop tunes. I love great soneros, the piano playing of Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz's incomparable voice and life force, the sociopolitical smarts -- and tumbao - of Rubén Blades and Willie Colon, and the transcendent power of Afro-Cuban rhythms.""

Here are some reviews by George De Stefano

Gilberto Santa Rosa, A Dos Tiempos De Un Tiempo
CD (Sony 80895),
"This beautifully crafted tribute to Tito Rodriguez was, in my opinion, the best salsa recording of 1992. What a disgrace that the rhythm-impaired Linda Ronstadt won the Latin Grammy last year instead of Santa Rosa and his masterpiece."

Henry Fiol, Fé, Esperanza Y Caridad
CD (SAR/Guajiro 1012),Released 1990;
"A prickly temperament and an unfashionable devotion to the classic Cuban són have made this New York-based singer/songwriter a virtually unknown quantity. But his is an idiosyncratic talent that deserves wide recognition. Check his extended version of Cheo Marquetti's 'Oriente,' and 'La Juma de Ayer'."

Poncho Sanchez, With Special Guest Freddie Hubbard - Cambios
CD (Concord Picante 4439),
"The repertoire includes Kern and Harbach, Ellington, and Freddie Hubbard, who guests here, as well as originals by percussionist Sanchez and his pianist David Torres. As you might expect, West Coast Latin jazz is less frenetic than its East Coast cousin can often be, but it cooks nonetheless."
