Alfredo Cruz
"It took him twenty-two years to get there, but he finally made it! On June 30, 1997, Alfredo Cruz became the morning drive host at KLON/88.1 FM in Long Beach, CA, the nation's number one jazz station and the most listened to public radio station in the Los Angeles market. Before heading west, Cruz spent five years as a production manager and on-air host at WBGO/88.3 FM in Newark, NJ, where he launched and hosted the popular "Latin Jazz Cruise" in 1989. While at WBGO, he became a fixture and integral member of New York's Latin and jazz communities. A native of San Antonio, TX, Cruz holds a bachelor's degree in Radio/Television and Film from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's degree in journalism from Ohio State University. Cruz has contributed to many recordings as a broadcaster, producer and writer, and is committed to being an effective world-wide advocate for Latin jazz. "Since my focus has been mainly jazz for most my life," says Alfredo, "I've decided to concentrate my selections on your catalog's Latin jazz offerings. I'll leave the selections in the folklore/historic Latin, salsa, and other genres to be highlighted by individuals specializing in those areas.""

Here are some reviews by Alfredo Cruz

Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy's Business
CD (Milestone 47069),Released 1962;Re-Issued 1993;
"When one of the all-time greatest saxophonists ventures into Brazilian jazz with a title like this, dedicated to one of the inventors of bebop, Dizzy Gillespie, well, there's just no way you can go wrong. Wrap it up."

Charlie Parker, South Of The Border
CD (Verve/Poly. 527 779),Released 1995;
"The genius of Bird crossed all musical boundaries and this collection of his 'Latin sides' finds the inventor of bebop soaring in top form. In spite of his brief cameo, in life as in Latin music, he helped set the standard for Latin jazz while it was still in its infancy. Gotta get it!"

Chico O'Farrill, Cuban Blues: The Chico O'Farrill Sessions
CD (Verve/Poly. 533256),Re-Issued 1996;
"Essential fare for any Latin jazz enthusiast. This is the man behind many of the Machito, Dizzy, Kenton, Basie and Bauza big band arrangements which defined the sound. One of the few surviving pioneers of the genre, Chico's writing and arranging is polished and sophisticated. Here, he leads his own orchestras through a collection of recordings spanning several decades. Viva Chico!"

Dizzy Gillespie, Dizzy Gillespie And His Big Band In Concert ó Featuring Chano Pozo
CD (GNP/Crescendo 23),Released 1948;Re-Issued 1993;
"The collaboration of Dizzy and Chano is probably the most important in the development of 'Latin jazz.' This historic and legendary performance of the Cuban conguero with the great trumpeter and his big band is a rare documentation of the embryonic stages of Latin jazz. Unavailable for years, we shouldn't miss this opportunity to hear just what that new 'Latin' & jazz combination of the 40s was all about."

Flora Purim & Airto, Samba De Flora
CD (Montuno 528),
"One of the most gorgeous records I've ever heard, mostly because it was one of pianist Jorge Dalto's final recording sessions. His playing here is compelling, spiritual and exhausting. Airto's surprising and beautiful baritone Spanish vocal on 'La Puerta,' with only piano accompaniment, is worth ten times the cost of this record. Flora, too, is in top form, especially on the poignant 'Dedos.'"

Hilario Duran, Killer Tumbao: Cuban Jazz All Stars
CD (Justin Time 101-2),Released 1997;
"One of the latest musical offerings from Cuba, pianist Duran is passionate, technical, inspired and engaging. This band of Cuban all-stars rises to the occasion with some heavy duty playing and arrangements. I don't know what it is, but there's an unexplained intensity, urgency and edge to the music which only Cubanos seem to achieve. Very special! "

Irakere, Misa Negra
CD (Universal/Pimienta 360625),Released 1987;
"I'm not sure if I included this in the first Descarga catalog a few years ago. If I didn't, I should have. If I did, please disregard. This is the best of the post-Paquito (D'Rivera) and Arturo (Sandoval) Irakere groupings and recordings of the 80s. This CD shows why Chucho Valdes' group has remained atop the heap and continues undisputed as the most important jazz ensemble in Cuban history. The playing and arrangements are hot, sweaty and inspiring. An ear and eye opening recording that will have your jaw dragging the floor. Cuban jazz at its best. Very, very good!"

Jerry Gonzalez, Fire Dance - Jerry Gonzalez & Fort Apache Band
CD (Milestone 9258),Released 1996;
"He is considered by many to be the most 'serious' Latino musician exploring jazz today. This recording captures Jerry and the band in their most effective environment, in 'live' performance. Hard-core, straight-ahead jazz & bebop with deep and sacred Afro-Cuban rhythms. If you're really serious about being on the cutting-edge of 'Latin jazz,' then this gang of bad-boys from the Bronx is the band for you. Whew!"

CD (Seeco 9292),Re-Issued 2001;
"Breakin' Out,' (TL#14895) and 'Vagabundeando! Hangin' Out,' (TL#13930). No one exemplifies that unique time in the development of New York Latin music when R&B so comfortably coexisted with traditional Latin rhythms. La Lupe, Mongo Introduces La Lupe
CD (Milestone 9210),Released 1963;Re-Issued 1993;
"I'm pretty sure it was La Lupe who invented the concepts of 'sexy' and 'sassy.' If not, she certainly epitomized them. This Cuban vocalist was scandalous in her day and this recording with Mongo Santamaria and his band does justice to both; the sultry singer and Mongo's killer jazz band of the 60s. Gotta have it!"

Michel Camilo, One More Once
CD (Columbia/Sony 66204),Re-Issued 1994;
"OK, if you have only a couple of Latin jazz big band records in your collection, this should be one of them. This phenomenal pianist explodes with this impressive big band performing arrangements of earlier Camilo 'hits.' This is a hard swinging recording which features some of the biggest and most important Latino and jazz players on the scene today."

Poncho Sanchez, Soul Sauce: Memories Of Cal Tjader
CD (Concord Picante 4662),Released 1995;
"Poncho's best record ever. This is also one of the finest 'tribute' records ever made. Poncho's choice of Ruben Estrada to play Cal's vibes parts was genius. Estrada embodies the spirit of Tjader without imitating him. He infuses the selections with a sense of joy and inspired playing, as do the other musicians. This recording swings from beginning to end. Everything about it is ***** (5 star)."

Tito Puente, Night Beat / Mucho Puente, Plus!
CD (Bear Family 15686),Released 1958;Re-Issued 1993;
"I could have easily made up a list of twenty-five Puente recordings alone, but I'll narrow it down to two. Dancemania Vol. 2 (TL#11631) is said to be one of Tito's favorites, containing some big hits, mambos, boleros, instrumentals, etc... Jazzwise, for me it would have to be the recent reissue of Nightbeat/Mucho Puente Plus. Classic 50s material firmly establishing Tito as a major player in the world of music - not just Latino either. Serious, hard swingin' big band stuff up there with Basie, Duke, and Kenton."

'Live at the Palladium' contains great hits that you can work up a sweat with. For jazz lovers, try 'Live at Birdland' featuring Zoot Sims and others."
