Raul Rico Jr.
"Raul Rico Jr. Is a Chicano, born on September 8, 1954 in Oxnard, California. From October 1984 to January 1998 he hosted and produced the salsa and Latin jazz program "Onda Latina" on KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara. Since October 1994 he has hosted and produced "Jazz Latino" on Thursday nights at the NPR affiliate KCLU in Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara. In January 1998 he debuted the salsa program, "Saturday Night Salsa," and he also produces and co-hosts a world music program entitled "Global Beat" with Marci Browne at KCLU. Also a musician, Raul started playing Afro-Cuban percussion professionally with the Estrada Brothers band in 1976 and for the last ten years has been the band's manager and has also produced or co-produced several of their albums. In addition to his affiliation with the Estrada Brothers, he also leads a twelve piece "classic" salsa orchestra, Sonido Libre; a seven piece band, Mambo'n; and stretches his musical boundaries with his Latin jazz fusion quintet, Rumba Jazz. He is also a freelance writer and music critic for "Latin Beat" and "L.A. Jazz Scene." Raul says, "I'd like to apologize to all the maestros and musicians whom I may have overlooked because I still believe every record made is someone's artistic work and should be acknowledged as such as well as appreciated. I just let my heart speak and compiled some of my favorites at this particular phase of my life." "

Albita Rodriguez, No Se Parece A Nada

"I really can't explain why, but I really dig this woman's voice, approach, and style. The production and musicianship is slick and polished, almost commercially so. Nevertheless, an exciting domestic debut."

Cal Tjader, Soul Sauce
CD (Verve/Poly. 521 668),Re-Issued 1994;
"When I did this list the first time around, this CD hadn't been reissued, but now it is available. I wrote, 'Tjader's biggest seller featured his signature tune "Guachi Guara" aka as "Soul Sauce." All of Tjader's albums are great, but this is a classic.' I haven't changed my opinion."

Jerry Gonzalez, Rumba Para Monk - Jerry Gonzalez & Fort Apache Band
CD (Sunnyside SSC1036D),Released 1989;
"Jerry and ensembles' idea of juxtaposing legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk's compositions, or as Jerry calls them, 'masterpieces,' atop Afro-Cuban rhythms is one of the most innovative things to happen in Latin jazz. Their approach and sound have become signature. Many compare, none imitate. Truly a classic of the genre."

Juan De Marcos And The Afro-Cuban Allstars, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta
CD (Nonesuch 79476),Released 1997;
"American musician Ry Cooder's concept of going to Cuba and recording with some of the island's unheralded musicians, old and new, is extraordinary. One of three sessions recorded at Egrem studios, which were built by RCA in the 40s. The producers used the recording techniques of that era but utilized the technology of today. The results are magnificent. All three are winners, but this is my favorite."

This CD won the 1995 award for best Latin jazz recording in Cuba and deservedly so. It features, in addition to Maraca, Chucho Valdes and some of the members of Irakere. A must have."
