Alan James Geik
"Alan James Geik was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. In the late 50s and early 60s the musical environment was a sometimes surreal mix of R&B, bebop, rock & roll, Latin dance and folkloric music, and Broadway musicals. "None of us realized at the time time how special that era was," says Alan. He began on the radio in November of 1979 at KCRW in Santa Monica, CA. "I had never thought of being a d.j. before I actually got the job," he comments. "One evening I called Eddie Lopez, the host of 'Latin Dimensions.' He mentioned that he wanted to leave the show but was looking for a replacement that would keep the show alive. For some reason I asked 'how about me?' It seemed like it might be fun for a few months. Ten years later I was still there." By that tme he had also logged eight years on the air at 'Alma del Barrio' on KXLU. November 13, 1998 will be Alma's twenty-fifth anniversary. "That's a great run for a public radio show," Alan says. "Being a part of Alma for seventeen of those years has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. I have had the great fortune to meet and befriend numerous wonderful people. That has been a blessing!""
