The first thing to decide when choosing congas is to determine whether you would prefer wood drums or fiberglass drums. Generally, wood drums offer a very rich, warmer sound. However, the advances in fiberglass construction has made the sound quality less of an issue than it used to be. Fiberglass drums are typically louder, which is good for un-amplified playing, and they can take more abuse on the road if you do a lot of traveling. It is a personal choice, and many pros have both types.
Another consideration, although not as critical, is whether you prefer a 28" or a 30" height on the drums. Traditionally, congas drums are played seated, which makes the 28" preferable to some. However most players have no trouble playing the 30" drums seated. Additionally, you have a greater choice of drums with the 30" height.

Giovanni Galaxy Series Wood Congas
The LP Galaxy Giovanni Series Congas, designed with the help of master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, are truly the finest wood congas ever created. Hand crafted of premium North American ash wood with a rich, deep-gloss finish, these 30" tall drums have resonance, attack and warmth found in no other conga.
The Galaxy Giovanni Series Congas are crafted with LP's exclusive construction process using three plies of wood which are assembled using internal steel pins for reinforcement. All of the natural colors and tones of this premium wood shine through. They also feature gleaming gold hardware, patented Extended Comfort Curve II Rims and natural, hand picked rawhide heads.
Extra-heavy duty 3/8" diameter tuning lugs, integrated shell protectors, accessory pouch, with tuning wrench and Lug Lube are included.
LP has also created, with design specifications from Giovanni, the exclusive Requinto. The most amazing single conga ever, its combination of a 9 3/4" head, unique shell contour, and hardware geometry provide the broadest range of tone available in a single drum.

Galaxy Series Fiberglass Congas
 The LP Galaxy Fiberglass Congas are the finest fiberglass congas ever made. This top-of-the-line product has an impressive list of important features. The hardware is extra heavy-duty, including reinforced LP Hearts® (side-plates) secured with three bolts instead of the standard two, and LP Extended Collar Comfort Curve II Rims which increase tonal range. Tuning screws are 3/8" in diameter, an increase in strength of 40% over our standard size screws, offering greater tuning ease and increased thread life.
All drums stand 30" tall, wide belly, and narrow bottom to create rich, deep bass and crackling highs. These gorgeous Galaxy drums have a spectacular space-age, sparkle finish which is not done justice in the adjacent photo. The top half of the shell, where the greatest stress occurs, is reinforced with Kevlar® fiber, the bullet-proof vest material that's two-times stronger than steel.

Patato Series Fiberglass Congas
 LP has made the fiberglass conga an accepted professional instrument the world over. Initially, gaining acceptance for a fiberglass model conga was difficult because the conga had
traditionally been a wood product. Fiberglass soon became popular, however, because of two special, material-related factors. Fiberglass congas are louder than their wooden counterparts (an important factor in Latin dance bands), and fiberglass drums are extremely strong.
LP congas, especially fiberglass congas, are known as "world travelers," standing up strongly to air travel and the rigors of the road. Patato model congas are noted for generously contoured shells yielding both rich bass notes and crackling highs. The drums were developed in 1978 by Patato Valdez himself. Patato's own design required tall drums with a wide belly and small bottom, elements which deliver a deep bass and greater volume. The drums are 30" tall and have become standard equipment with high-profile musical acts in all forms of music. They come standard with chrome Comfort Curve II Rims, and hand-selected natural rawhide heads.

 The first wood conga ever introduced by LP, the graceful and functional shape of this drum is what has come to be known as Classic. The specially tapered bottom brings out the middle to high ranges of sound, and kiln dried Siam Oak wood construction reduces overtones while delivering a warm tone. Salsa Series Wood Congas
 For congueros who are accustomed to performing while seated, we've created the Salsa Model conga. It has the same features as the Classic Model but with a reduced height of 28". The shell contour is also similar as the Classic, but with a slightly wider bottom which help keeps the drum stable, even during the most aggressive play. It also adds to the drum's low and mid-range tones.
Siam Oak construction with 5/16" diameter tuning lugs. Fiberglass layer added to the inside upper portion of the shell to provide additional strength. Hand-selected natural rawhide skins with LP Comfort Curve II Rims.

Original Model Fiberglass Congas
 Virtually unchanged since their introduction in the 1960s, LP Original Model Congas have become the standard fiberglass conga of salsa players the world over. The 28" tall congas are the ideal height for the seated player. Their extra wide bottom aids in stability and also enhances the drum's low and mid range tones.
LP Original Model Congas feature chrome hardware, LP's famous Comfort Curve II Rims, 5/6 diameter tuning lugs and reinforced LP Heart Side Plates, each secured with a backing plate. Each drum comes with a hand picked, rawhide head.
The LP fiberglass shell has a steel ring embedded in the bearing (top) edge for added strength. All LP Original Model Congas come with LP Conga Shell Protectors on each lug, to help protect the drum's beauty, an accessory pouch, a tuning wrench and LP Lug Lube.

Jr. Congas - Wood or Fiberglass
 LP Jr. Congas are great as an addition to a multi-percussion set up, a drum kit, or for accenting or soloing. They are sold in pairs - one with an 8" head and the other with a 9" head, and have a sound that is a cross between a bata drum, a bongo, and a conga. Their 15" tall size makes them easy to transport and they feature hardware similar to full size LP congas.
Available in kiln-dried Siam oak or high-gloss resilient fiberglass, they come complete with Comfort Curve II rims, hardware similar to full-sized LP congas, and a chrome-plated, height adjustable conga stand with double braced legs.
