Here it is, you all! To those of you who've never heard some of these classics (particularly the studio "MAMBO CITY" -first time on CD! — which, along with Machito's Columbia "Mambo a la Savoy" and Argueso's SMC "Mambo habanero" — are to this superannuant the epitome of the Mambo Age 50's in NYC, catching the atmosphere of the city, the Palladium and, let's not forget, the Catskills), and to the rest of us, this is a SUPERDUPERMUSTHAVE or IMPRESCIBINDILISIMO!
When producer, mambologist extraordinary & TP intimate Joe Conzo tipped me this Vol. 2 was coming out 9/23, I dared whisper the titles of some of my hyperpredilects ... and here they are, an awful lot of which, like the impossibly good MAMBO CITY, have inexplicably not been before on CD (this side of the Caucasus, anyway)! Beg, borrow, steal, stiff the rent (again) or mug your out-of-work stockbroker to get this one.

Well polished, crisp, pop salsa release by the popular Venezuelan band. This one has a sense of clarity and drive, and although well polished, it avoids becoming overproduced. Nice bottom swing provided by the baritone sax and trombones. Porfi Baloa's "Ponte Pila" is a total DJ club hit: it is thoroughly gasoline-soaked combustible. Pop salsa doesn't get much better. And despite the inclusion of a ranchera version of "Se Acabo El Amor" — a commerical move that might offend the salsa purists, this one get's Highly Recommended for its straightforward honesty. It is a commercial band. And, for the record, I like the ranchera track. It works well here. (BP)
